A Wedding In The New Forest

Just a quick postcard from my sons wedding and a few images from the New Forest - off the cuff .

We ( my sis , nieces , partners , various children including Enzo stayed in a fabulous Victorian house within striking distance of the venue - we loved it so much we are making plans to visit every couple of years . Yes the decoration may not be to my taste but the space and location was perfect. My now daughter in law chose to spend her pre wedding night with us too and we gave her the fanciest room.

Where the handfasting took place - just before the ceremony two deer passed behind - I'm hoping someone got a photo of them .

Anyway I may have missed the deer that came to the wedding, but I did manage to capture some before we left and headed home. The white deer is pretty rare I believe, but much easier to spot in the open .

I love that you all found such a perfect place to celebrate together and find it totally lovely that the bride got to have a traditional time-with-women-of-the-family for her last night before the wedding.

The area all around is downright magical, as are your photos of it. New Forest ponies! Deer! Open fields and forest!

I echo Htmb's praise for your people portraits. That picture of the happy couple in a shower of confetti may be the most sincerely joyful wedding picture ever.

The bride's gown is also one of the most beautiful ever, and she is certainly the beauty to wear it.

It all seems like a landmark occasion that was delightful for everyone -- Enzo obviously thinks so. You all will remember this forever.

I am delighted that people like this sort of event, but I must confess that I always avoid them. I did not attend any of my brother's three weddings.

However, I have actually attended two weddings -- I went through the complete deal in Singapore for a friend, the church ceremony, the casual outdoor lunch afterwards, and the super duper ultra sophisticated luxury hotel banquet. The fact that it was Singapore is what made me want to go, as well as the fact that my friends had met my parents, who thought they were wonderful. The called my parents 'Aunt' and 'Uncle' out of respect and admiration, as is done in such cultures (and of course now is not the time to reignite the debate about the terrible fate of Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima, who apparent found these terms of endearment insulting).

The other wedding I sort of attended was one of the son's of my mother's beloved goddaughter in rural France. The outdoor pre-wedding lunch was fine since it was just a small group of close family. Then there was the church, which I confess that I did not enter. I stayed just outside the (open) door and observed from a distance. It was a hot day and the church was sweltering (odd, since old village churches are generally cool). Then there was the outdoor pre-dinner for a big crowd. I was bored out of my wits. And then it was time to move on to the official banquet in the municipal hall, but I sneaked away like the shit that I was and drove back to Paris.

As for my own wedding it was a secret event in a municipal office and was nobody's business.

I missed my brother's wedding which was in Mauriac, France. I'd just had a c.section and was still in hospital. My sisters and their families went tho. As did the whole village where my SiL's family came from...there are photographs of the happy couple walking to the town hall to sign some documents...with all the wedding guests along with the villagers parading along behind them...I think that there was a church ceremony first but I'm not 100% certain.

I sometimes wonder whether big weddings are back after a period with small, intimate ones. We got married at city hall with my mother and my sister and her family, plus my husband's sister who had driven up from the States with her two young daughters.

The next day we had a small party with a bit more family and friends. No big fuss and our 44th anniversary is in two days so something worked.

Probably the rom-com movies of the moment help to influence interest in such events... or else repel people.

I love pics of weddings. From these emanate true love and friendship and happiness.

The bride is extremely beautiful and her dress is great. And her smile ... waw what a smile.

I also like weddings but less now.
I start being put at the same table with the oldies.
Due to my age maybe, if so it won't get any better in the future.

Someone mentioned -are big weddings back ? .. this was just a small budget driven occasion but I see so many of my children's friends and parents spending so much so I guess so.

Fumobici - I think they are pretty rare and did a google ... "Exceedingly rare! In fact, the chances of an albino deer being born are about 1 in 20,000, according to John Bates, Wisconsin Northwoods naturalist and co-author of White Deer: Ghosts of the Forest. Other sources say the odds are closer to 1 in 30,000."

I remembered a 3rd wedding that I attended, which now seems like a lot to me. I went to my friend's wedding in Strasbourg. No church ceremony, just the town hall event, made a bit strange by the fact that the officiant was the bride's mother, a city counsellor at the time. Lunch was at the huge family apartment (the father of the bride was a major Strasbourg banker), which I came to know much better over the years, since I slept there a number of times and was in charge of decorating the Christmas tree twice, since the parents had no interest in this, but the little boys absolutely loved it. The wedding lunch was the most incredibly delicious sauerkraut that I have ever eaten. It was catered by the best sauerkraut restaurant of Strasbourg, and I will never think of it as being a lowly peasant dish again. There was an all night party for the younger generation that night in the country house in Saales (in the Vosges), but I was not invited (and didn't want to be) -- my friend is 15 years younger than me, so it was totally normal anyway. His mother would have loved for me to share the drive back to Paris that evening (it's a 5-hour drive), but I luckily had a plane ticket to go home and did not have to put up with that ordeal. Now, I'm kind of sorry because I would have learned so many things on that drive.

What a perfectly lovely event! You captured it perfectly in every photo. One can see the joy and fun in many of the photos. The portraits are exquisite as others have noted.

I can't believe how much Enzo has grown!!!

Lugg and Casi -- we had some cake and wine with our daughter and her family this weekend so that's done. The only real big celebration we had was for our 40 years, when all the children and grandchildren were there. We often forget in fact. One year we were in a store buying a new washing machine. When I wrote out the cheque, I realized it was our anniversary.
