Interesting -- I always thought they were green.

There’s a free phone app called "aurora watch UK" for those who want to receive notices of possible upcoming displays.

Interesting -- I always thought they were green. I'm pretty sure they can be many colors, I've seen white, green, and pink/magenta. A friend posted some photos he took in Sweden last night and it was impressive. He knew nothing about them, was just taking the dog out to pee before he went to bed and noticed them. We had sightings even down here at 49N, although it was only clear enough on the dry side of the Cascade Range to see them, as one might expect.

I was given a lesson at breakfast this morning. The colours depend on which atoms in the air are hit by the magnetic field. Also that the reason for these spectacular aurorae is heavy sunspot activity.

The aurora borealis was visible in Paris last night, but I wasn't out looking for it.

Facebook is lit up with photos of the Aurora from all over the US, including the Deep South!
I’m hoping they will still be visible on our return from Sanibel to Montana, but I notice that some of the photos I’m seeing were taken on Sanibel! Should have taken a midnight beach walk last night.

On the news, they said it will probably continue tonight.

I didn't look on Friday, when the sky was clear, because I had assumed the lights wouldn't be visible this far south and apparently they were spectacular. Last night we had a thunderstorm and rain, so nothing to see.

I'm finding out that most of the photos people took of it and posted around here could only see it on their phone camera screen or photos, not with the naked eye. They look great on the Insta though!
I went out to see them again in the middle of the night and saw nothing again. Should have brought my phone to see them I guess. Astronomical phenomena, from meteor showers and comets, to lunar and partial solar eclipses, are 90% of the time destined to disappoint. This was no exception.
