There are odours i absolutely love and so e u hate. Plus for some i link them to colours.
My favorite odour in the kitchen is onion being cooked. I get mad and salivate when i smell it...
Bleach water is another strong odour that leaves me with mixed feelings. Sometimes i welcome it, but not always. It has a white colour for me.
I like the odour of gas (not natural gas, gas for cars). Red.
I hate smell of tobacco but strangely there is one odour of pipe i like...
What are your favorites ?

I love the smell of the interiors of old Volkswagen beetles. I got to smell one the other day & there it was -- that same classic smell.

A foul smell that I love is creosote and rotten prawns baking in the sun. It reminds me of fishing from a pier on the bayou when I was a child. The prawns were fish bait of course.

All of my favourite kitchen odours (except for crab and shrimp boil!) are from my grandmother's kitchen. I recreated one last night: veal and pork marinating in white wine with cloves, bay leaves, tarragon, shallots and rosemary. It's the cloves that really get me.

I like the usual....clean washing dried outside in the sun, freshly mown grass, coffee, seared beef steak, freesias, sandalwood...the smells in Indian restaurants are usually wonderful. The smell in my greenhouse of damp compost and plants is very pleasing on a warm day...
Unusual likes...creosote, my dog's paws (!), disinfectant, new leather shoes or bags, old books... My Mummy's lipstick which must be 40 years old is my go to 'sniff' when I'm having a bad day (Ikeep it on my dressing table)....'astral' soap used to remind me of my Nanna ...I think the dominant scent is sandalwood....they dont make the soap any more.
Dislikes...I don't cook kidneys, mushrooms or fish because I really can't abide the smell. Not a fan of a strong garlic smell, altho I can and do use it in cooking.

Thinking about this today as the stench of rape fields offended me as I went about daily life ; Love the smell of sweaty horses, roses, wild garlic, salty sea and so many others ....but most of all the smell of freshly picked hops , I wind my windows down when passing a field or a tractor with newly cut hops on.

I'm not sure I know what hops smell like, but I know that I prefer beer with as much hops as possible.

My godmother's house always had this particular smell that I can best describe as how the house smells after you've been sauteeing bell peppers. It was a light smell, not heavy, and I loved it. To this day I'll get a whiff of it, maybe after entering my own house after having cooked earlier. It always makes me think of Nan-nan.
Probably in common with most people, I love the smell of leather.

I like the smell of leather too. One smell I liked as a kid but don't find often now is that of a certain kind of plastic. During my Canadian youth, women used to wear these strange plastic rainboots over their shoes, like these but transparent.

The smell I can’t forget is my primary school nearly 70 years ago. The smell of cabbage boiling in the kitchens. Foul.

I remember my mother boiling "six-penn'orth of coley* for the cat". That certainly drove us out of the house (and I don't think the cat was all that appreciative either) *Fish My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

Reply No1 took me back to 1940 and the peculiar smell of German aircraft. There was an old barn across the road from where we lived which the army used to collect crashed German aircraft and we kids were always on the scrounge for 'souvenirs'. I vividly remember several of us cheering when the remains of a bomber which had exploded a couple of miles away were unceremoniously tipped out.

One smell I liked as a kid but don't find often now is that of a certain kind of plastic. During my Canadian youth, women used to wear these strange plastic rainboots over their shoes, like these but transparent. I remember those well. It seems to me that they used to be sold folded up inside of a rubbery plastic bag, just like those "ballet flats" that were also popular back then. Your comment abruptly made me remember the smell of new dolls under the tree on Christmas morning. The smell I can’t forget is my primary school nearly 70 years ago. My various grade schools always smelled like chalk & my personal dread. I remember my mother boiling "six-penn'orth of coley* for the cat". Sounds like a pampered household. A tragic household would have been if she was cooking that up for the family. I vividly remember several of us cheering when the remains of a bomber which had exploded a couple of miles away were unceremoniously tipped out. Ha! Christmas & all your birthdays rolled into one.
