On my never ending quest for under the radar small pittoresque towns I am tonight sleeping in Bad Hersfeld.
There are traces of human settlements going back to 2000 bc but the city was mostly founded in IX century with the abbey being enlarged in the following centuries and burnt down by the French in a war before Napoleon making it the largest Roman ruins in Europe.
Since 1951 a festival takes place inside the ruins.
A quiet town.

Main square. Typical German houses made of timber. The Rathaus - city hall. germany is too clean to have rats in their houses ! Some big old building. Me new church. From XIV ? Luther held a speech / sermon here. In 1521. I live the contrast between the well renovated facade and the shabby roof and last floor. I ate there. I had decide on a Thai but steak house made it for me. Lovely . Some newer building looking like older ones. A bit of an Austrian look imho. The ruins. That tower in young. XIV I think. That part is older The wall on the left most probably dates from the creation of the church. The park is nice.

So here are the inhabitants ?
Hey this is Germany. So late in the evening (20 30 or 8 30 pm) I didn’t see more than 10 people in the streets…

Very attractive. Probably not a lot to do.

I forgot to mention that it is a spa town as the name ‘bad’ indicates.
And we are here one hour from Kassel Munster and Frankfurt. Some might like it but I have zero hope to bring my wife one day.

Looks kike a fine place to me. I imagine that even a lot of the old buildings must have been rebuilt/restored after the war.

Apparently Bad Hersfeld was spared by WW2.

It is pretty but where is everyone? It wasn't even raining.
I just had a look on Wikipedia to see where it is located. Turns out that the population is about 30,000 and declining. And that the place was a large American army base until 1993.

Very pretty place!
It looks as though they took their sweet time deciding to shore up the castle/fort.
What are the pieces of cement(?) there in the park?
I love the gray house all covered in fish scales.
How was your steak?

I love the fish clad house too. Made of steung, but brittle stones called ardoise.
I think there are no cement 'art' in the abbey, it was metal structure. No idea what it was.
I took spare ribs (pork) in the end. Had a steak the next day.

The scaly shingles are common in some parts of France, too.
