Whatagain in York

I was delighted to spend an afternoon in York.
This city is one of my favourite in UK and has a long history, being Eoferwic in the time of Alfred (according to Bernard Cornwell chronicle of Uthred of Bebbamburg).

So after an uneventful journey but quite a difficult search for a parking (I had no coins and didn’t manage payment by phone must find a solution for next time), I went to my hotel to drop my bag and went in exarch of food losing myself in the streets, as is my habit to visit a city.

I was about to enter York, which retains some imposing gates. 




I think this neighbourhood could be turned into a nice commercial center.  


More walls. 

I tried to park close to the railways station but it was only for short stay. 
the station looked gigantic to me. 



I finally manage to park my car.  
strange to drive on the right side of the car and stranger to handle the stick with the left hand.

Unfortunately I didn’t think I had the time for visiting the museum. 
still on my todo list.  

i like to take a pic of where I am parked. 

Well the locals have a strange look but look quite friendly.  

Just close by the entrance to York museum of something, with Minet paintings. 
closed on Mondays. 


Splendid ruins in the park. 



Beautiful. 

My heart always bleed when I see warhammers as Robin loved them. 
i always stop and have a look and wonder if…



Minster via a crowded street - and we are only in junember (which as everybody knows is calendar June with weather of November). 

There seems to be clicks everywhere 
I think it is Saint Martin church. 


Very beautiful inside. 

With beautiful stained glass. 
Old houses using lots of timber like in Normandy (maisons à colombages we say in French).

That is better. 
I love it.

Then it was time for a walk on the walls.  
through the tower gate first. 

Kind of a version of la promenade plantée overlooking cafes and shops. 
I was not alone. It gave me an opportunity to take a pic of these old roof tiles. 


Some nice gardens with Minster in the back. 

The spire fell from the cathedral and remains since in that garden. 

This is actually a restaurant. Could be nice. 
The stairs at another tower gate. No fat guards at that time.

This was where the first Protestant approved bible was kept. 


I could not go far there was an office.  
they should keep their offices at times I am not there ! It was 7 30 am. Who prays so early ?

Then came the best part.
Evening.

My friend and I at the same pub we were last time 10 years ago. 


The Guy Fawkes pub. 


The anteroom of the toilet ! 
I wish I had a diamond cutter. 


A special dance typical of York. 

The owner of the Viceroy who could not believe I had actually pay for my glasses.  

They get civilised in UK. 
you can find good wine.  
that is all folks.

York looks excellent. You'd think that some of our British members would have shown us York before now.

Is your compnay giving out funny eyeglasses to everybody?

There are 2 on York, one by Mossie and one by me.

Sorry, it slipped my mind but underlined something you said a few days ago.

I’ve been through the York train station a few times now, but have never gotten to explore the city. This report is making me think about it even more for a trip in the near future. Will also definitely need to re-read the other couple of anyport reports first.

If you do, don’t bother with river trip. It’s a pretty dull river.

Jorvik Viking Centre is good.

Gosh you packed a lot into your time there Whatagain. Lovely report of a great city.

I am glad to be reminded that there is more on York in anyport. This report is a worthy addition.

In fairness to anyone who didn't remember all the reports, it would be a lot easier if the proboards search engine weren't so worthless.

Kerouac has repeatedly reminded us to include pertinent words in our titles because that makes it easier to find a particular subject. Using the Ctrl+F feature, I found Whatagain's, Mossie's, & Mick's York/Yorkshire reports on page 1 of the UK board, and Mick's York Railway Museum report on page 3 of UK. After trying various tricks, I still can't locate Lugg's. Was it one taken @ Christmastime maybe and involved a fair and young people?

But I digress ~~~~

Whatagain, you took some really wonderful pictures. I did not realize there was so much of very old historic York still standing, nor that it's such a beautiful city. (must revisit other York reports!) There is so much lovely green space there.

You certainly managed to see and capture a great deal in the limited time you had. The Minster is very deserving of its impressive reputation! I admire how you always find good food and drink wherever you go. What a treat to see your friend & enjoy the same pub again.

I think the dance you saw is a Morris dance. The UKers here can correct me.

My deepest admiration for being able to drive with the stick shift on the left. I might manage driving an automatic on the left without killing anyone, but I think shifting on the left would defeat me.

I was kind of happy the first time I drove a car with the stick shift on the left because it finally felt natural.

I’m sorry. It’s not a “stick shift” on a RH drive car. It’s a gear lever!
