Literary resurrections.

I was wondering what was your opinion towards keeping alive or even resurrecting heroes of romans be it in books or comic books.

I am now reading my third book of Dophie Hannah and enjoy very much following Hercules Poirot,s new adventures.

However Agatha made sure her character died and some criticise the fact that Hercule is back at work and consider the new plots as vastly inferior to the original ones.

If it were to be true (but I liked one of SH and disliked some of AC) at least I have the pleasure to follow my hero in his inquiries.

What about you ?

I read a James Bond book by William Boyd, a writer I like, but was not satisfied with the book. One of the pleasures of reading the originals is the fact that they are set in a specific time and place even when they are completely fictional. New versions are never quite right.

I also read P.D. James's follow-up to Pride and Prejudice, Murder comes to Pemberley. It was okay, but it wasn't Jane Austen.

I enjoy the Thursday Next series, in which famous fictional characters have parts. But those are all good silly fun and the author does not even pretend to take on the mantle of the authors who created those characters.

But I can't thing of a single series that needs to be revived once the original author was through with it. For that matter, series often lose their oomph once they've gone on for a while -- the latest Commissario Brunetti book has been received with apathy by the series' fans.

That said, I'm not against someone reviving a series if an author thinks he/she is up to it. Apparently there are fans out there who'd be happy to see more of a defunct series they'd enjoyed.

Theo’s phenomenon happens also very often with comic books.

Some are just great some less.
A lot of Astérix are very bad after Goscinny’s death, the Blake and Mortimer recreated recently are 90% excellent and I doubt a non fan would see any difference.

I was surprised too so I looked it up -- no, she is not dead. But I knew that she had left Venice and moved to Switzerland.

I loved the Literary Detective books with Thursday Next too Bixa...the baddies all had excellent names..a favourite being Jacques Schitt

I read some books where the authors had died before finishing a series. Harry Whittaker completed his Mother (Lucinda Riley's) 'The Seven Sisters' series...and did a reasonable job of it. Ann McCaffrey's son Todd took over the Pern books when his Mum died too..but I've not read any of his.

As most Belgians I hate Moulinsart.
They hijacked Tintin.
