Opening my front door and finding a very large and active black snake outside is yet another reminder that I'm home.

It's local color! Aren't black snakes the kind that keep the rodent population down?

Yes. No mice or rats for me as long as there's a black snake outside my front door!

Maybe you should send that black snake to kerouac, so all his mouse problems would finally be solved.
I don't know what reaction I would have had when faced with a snake at the door - did he ring the bell? But when I cleaned out a window box yesterday, I was faced with a very active GIANT black spider, and nearly passed out - but not before I managed to shake it out the window, which I will never, ever open again.

Since the snake has probably enjoyed a summer of sunning itself, completely undisturbed, outside my front door, it was just as surprised as I, and it slithered away as fast as possible. I've seen it around for the past several years, and once found old skin that had been shed in the narrow bed alongside my walkway. I don't like to be surprised by creatures, but have no other problems with them. Chexbres, being from the south, I doubt that spider intimidated you one little bit.

htmb - giant, flying cockroaches with a 16-inch wingspan - those, I can handle. Spiders - any kind of spiders - make me dissolve in a puddle of my own gravy.
Now I've just discovered that I have silverfish, which I have never seen or dealt with before. Apparently, they live in the gas cooktop and "eat carbohydrates, coffee, glue, hair...and their own exoskeletons".

When I lived in Alaska (ages 4 & 5), everyone called the silverfish that infested the Quonset huts "ice worms". My family had this record and I can still sing the flip side of it. (which is why I can't remember things like algebra). Montana Slim - When The Ice Worms Nest Again/Shackles And Chains (with vintage RCA company sleeve) - EX8/ - 45 rpm Records ~ available for $9.99!

I've only known silverfish to hang around moisture - that's why I find them in my bathtub and around the kitchen sink occasionally. Not as bad as big spiders, though!

They will eat through any stored books, paper or fine fabrics. Moth balls or camphor will keep their numbers manageable.

I prefer silverfish wrangler. It's a tough job but someone has to do it...round them up and drive them down the bath tub plug hole Hee Haa..

We have earwigs. I found one on my mouth when I rewarmed a cup of coffee that had been on the counter overnight. Spit it out, it was dead. Ugh!

Yuck!
I'm wondering if my hard drive is going to hold all my photos from this summer. I need to get an external drive.

Earwigs will eat through your brain and exit through your other ear while you're sleeping.
It's weird - the silverfish/ice worms only live where there is no paper, fine fabrics or books! They are disgusting, though...will try some camphor, thanks Wrangler!

Earwigs will eat through your brain and exit through your other ear while you're sleeping. That's a wives tale. I hope!

I remember reading a (short?) story about someone who was sent mad by having some form of insect tunnelling through their brain from one ear to the other. Can't remember for the life of me what it was called. Eventually it came out the other side as he fell down dead.
(Then hid under the pillow for the next victim. Always check under your pillow in hotels. You never know.)

My dog gets in my bed at night, goes to an awful lot of trouble to make a very specific nest out of the blankets, sleeps in her pile for about 12 minutes, then gets up abruptly and goes to sleep on the couch. I find this endearing, but a little weird.

It's almost time for me to buy a kilo of sugar, something I do only about once every 4 years.

I hope I don't regret the $20 I spent on the bottle of French rosé I purchased today. It came from a case the local store owner bought for a transplanted Frenchman and the wine is supposed to be very good. The weather is still extremely hot here, plus I must continue to make frequent trips to the dentist, so I figure I'm due for a good bottle of wine.

What rosé is this htmb if I may ask ? Bordeaux, côtes de Provence, ... I had a côtes du rhône today (domaine des Girasols, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault... que du bon ).

Well, Côtes de Provence is the most common rosé in France.

It's a pretty good bottle. Better than the €3 stuff I was buying at Franprix, but I wouldn't pay $20 for it again.

I'm hoping the large, dead roach I see on my floor is the same one I spotted on the ceiling the other night.
