Oh my, thank you, Casimira! Great that you remembered, because I forgot. I'd also forgotten that this thread was started by Henning, so nice to remember that as well.
I can only echo Kerouac in thanking everyone who has stuck with this endeavor since the beginning and those who kindly joined along the way.

I only joined because Henning started a cactus thread and it turned up on my Google notification.

I certainly don't mind and am flattered to "carry the torch" so to speak, for dear Henning every year it seems since he started this thread.
(I almost forgot this year, signs of an addled mind I hope not)

Thank you, casimira. We are still limping along in lockdown, but things should pick up once we are all vaccinated.

Oh ~ that sneaked up on me! Thanks for the reminder and happy greetings, Casimira. I think we all deserve a special pat on the back this year. 2020 was a horrible year for the whole world. Anyporters have endured illnesses and the worst kinds of personal losses. Obviously, there has been no (or very limited) recreational travel. Globally, the news is still dominated by the pandemic. NEVERTHELESS ...Haven't we done remarkably well for a forum?! This far-flung group of people has supported each other through all kinds of bad things, yet continues to provide useful, interesting, cheery and even comedic content. Some have managed to venture away from home and have shared wonderful pictures and lively accounts of those jaunts. One member has brought verve and creativity to updating his long-running story threads. Another has turned a tedious necessary move into an fascinating ongoing account of a new life. Every single one of you keep the forum running and moving forward with your amusing, clever, insightful, poignant, witty, &/or surprising comments. And with all of that, Any Port in a Storm continues to pull in new (often shy) members and thousands of viewers. So, many thanks to all of you for the very rich past twelve years and a toast to many more to come. ❤️

Thanks for pointing that out, Kerouac. Of course I keep casual track of how threads do over time, but it's good to have hard numbers proving how pertinent and interesting anyport's content is.

Congratulations to the two hardworking mods and the original folk who got all this started. Was there any particular reason Anyport had its beginnings on Groundhog Day?

You mean Candlemas (Chandeleur), the presentation of Jesus at the Temple?
40 days after Christmas. The consumption of crêpes on this day is obligatory in France. I have actually not ever eaten a crêpe on this day, probably because I eat a crêpe only once every 3-5 years.
To answer the question seriously, the site was in preparation for a couple of months before its launch. It was hard to find clever names for all of the sections (with a port theme), and probably many members have never even noticed this. Some of the sections have never fully developed, because we based our ideas on the site from which we were splitting.
Bixa might remember our speculations about what would happen on the Sports Page. (I'm kind of glad that it never came to pass.)

Since it is a special day, I would like to make a special tribute to our deceased member HWINPP who ahared all of his trips with us but also shared his incredible meals. I do understand that fewer and fewer people here are doing that here (especially since the demise of Don Cuevas), but for me it was always one of the most appealing aspects of this site and that is why I made a compilation of many of Henning's meals.

Happy Anniversary to all. My safe space here is always appreciated. Thanks again to K2 and Bixa and to all the lovely people I have met on here. I especially remember HWINPP too for his posts, but mostly as the first person who welcomed me here.
Bickering among friends /family is so normal ( and maybe this extends to forum members ?) ... and actually can be healthy

Go to any decent sized park and watch the semi-wild birds...pigeons,sea gulls, crows etc. They have set up their 'pecking order' and as little kids throw crumbs to them, the birds chase away strangers to the flock and protect their own. In their own ranks they will argue and squabble, sometimes even wounding each other, but they are well programmed enough to know that a flock bird cannot survive on its own. Now put them in cage...keep them apart from other birds, separate the older from the younger birds and give them no space to fly freely. It won't take long before the birds lose their sense of pecking order and fight to hurt their nest-mates.
Let's just hope they open the cages very soon so we can stretch our wings again. There is such a lot of sky to see before our feathers drop out.
