30 years ago, something like 98% of the tornadoes in the world occurred in the United States and Canada, but now there are more and more in Europe.

It is a well known fact that the earth is speeding up and causing this. What most don't realise is that the reason the earth rotates is because of penguins running around the north pole. Due to climate change the weather is milder there and more penguins are being born, thus more are running and pushing the earth around faster.

But shouldn't that faster-moving North Pole be counteracted by the penguins in Antarctica? I believe there are more penguins there, so the earth should in fact be slowing down as they run the other way.

Far from it. They exacerbate the situation. Recent research shows that the South Pole penguins do in fact run the other way, i.e. in the opposite direction to the North Pole penguins - however - and this is where you might need to get your thinking cap on, so (polar) bear with be. The North Pole ones run clockwise - the South Pole ones run 'the opposite way', i.e. anti-clockwise. True enough. But......
Because they are upside down, relative to each other, they are actually running in concert with each other. They are running rotationally the same way. Imagine a large ball, or try it on a real one. If the top turns clockwise when viewed from above, the bottom turns anti-clockwise when viewed from below.
To negate the effect of the north ppppp pppp ppenguins, the south ones have to run in the 'same' direction as they see it from where they are, so both must run clockwise or anti-clockwise.
It's true. Trust me.

The only ones that don't run at all are the Emperor penguins. It's beneath them. They have to show some decorum.

Even when the polar bears chase them?

Polar bears = North Pole Emperor penguins = South Pole. Sorry.

You Northern Hemisphere people have it easy. Those like me 'down under' have to hang on to something all the time so we don't fall off the planet. That is why we like swimming so much. The weight of the water makes it stick to the planet and if we are in the water we can stick to the planet without having to hang on to something. It doesn't have to be a lot of liquid, sometimes a few beers will do the trick and you can see how the drinkers are already lying down and hanging on to Mother Earth.

Polar bears = North Pole Emperor penguins = South Pole. Sorry. I meant those vicious elephant seals of course.

Of course, however they tend to be resting when they come ashore in Antarctica. "While elephant seals may come ashore in Antarctica occasionally to rest or to mate, they gather to breed in subantarctic locations."

We're having complicated weather today. Windy, occasionally sunny...and every so often torrential rain storms. Got drenched when walking the dog, dried off and thenmgotvsoaked through again, when we went to the supermarket.

I'm wondering if the remnants of cyclone Idai are moving inland to refresh Zambia.

We are watching it. We know several people affected by it in eastern Zimbabwe. Not here yet though.

It was sunny but there was a biting cold wind. We've had a bit of rain this afternoon.

Ups and downs these days. Either beautiful and sunny and over 20° or else cool, windy, cloudy and about 12°. Today seems to be the latter.

This past week has been glorious. Real Springtime like weather. 50F's in the early a.m. Sunny clear and up to 70F's during the day.
Many migratory birds coming in. My mulberry tree the past three mornings has been full of cedar waxwings and purple finches. I've seen a few goldfinches and earlier in the week saw the first hummingbird of the season.
