Casimira, Miz Wiggles and her human were both very lucky to have you around for the inevitable transition. What a lovely thing you did!
Mick, your story may not be as pretty, but knowing of what you call your gardening jobs, it was certainly equally kind. In all fairness, T is the one who had to use a railroad pick axe to dig the grave as it was so full of roots and a layer of bricks from at least 50 years ago that had been covered over. BTW, beautiful old St. Joe bricks that my friend let me have which I know you could appreciate how thrilled I was to acquire. It was good therapy for his hands though.

This is the very last year that a paper telephone directory was printed for the white pages in France. The yellow pages will be printed for the last time next year. Naturally, the news had a report showing old people who don't like that new fangled internet stuff.

Here, private companies financed by advertising and placements leave their phone books out next to my mailbox about twice a year. I have to pick them up, transfer them to the appropriate recycling bin and deal with them. What a meaningless waste it is.

Our directories are usually left outside in the weather where, if you’re out of town and don’t retrieve them right away, they become a useless pulpy mess.
I think the phone company hires delivery people rather than paying to mail them, so by law they cannot place them in the (weather-resistant) US Mail boxes.

Daughter in Florence for Trade Fair this week.
But Florence is fog bound so landed at Bologne and on bus now. Not a good start. Hope she is in time for food.

Hmm, yes ~ I see what Kerouac means. A harsh lesson might have helped, but it would have been a shame for the rest of the family.
So are you back in Belgium, Whatagain? Were you sorry to leave the tropics?

I am surprised that France allowed this Belgian delinquent into Martinique, but I guess they don't control documents when flying from France.

Sounds idyllic, Whatagain, and a vacation you richly deserved and needed. When I was in Cuba, I remembered that I'm not all that enthusiastic about rum, but I nobly consumed it anyway out of respect for the host country.

Two different friends announced their father's death to me in the last 12 hours. Considering how few fathers are still alive, it seems like an epidemic.

Carnival of Aalst (somewhere in Flanders where I have never been and probably never will) has been excluded from UNESCO pateumonium list. Reason : some participants (too many) being disguised in Nazi uniforms or as Jews in concentration camps. Classy. Aalst has decided they found it funny and therefore decided to do nothing. They just said they would get out of UNESCO IMMATERIAL PATRIMONIY. According to radio judaica seems a lot of participants will focus on Nazi / Jewish disguises. Just to show how indépendant they are. I already have nausea and I think I'll feel disgusted and ashamed of being a Belgian if it goes as announced. More on 23 feb.

That is absolutely shocking -- obscene, really! I don't think you need to be ashamed of being Belgian, but any citizen of Aalst who has not registered displeasure should be ashamed.

At the same time, I don't understand the controversy about Zwarte Piet in certain areas. He is not at all a "black face" person, but just a "dirty face" person due to the soot on his face. Must everybody be clean at all times? Even in northeastern France, we have this personnage, "Le Père Fouèttard," the "whipping priest" who punishes bad children. He also has a dirty face because of hanging out in chimneys and such.
If we eliminate every single scary or negative item from the lives of children, they will become weak and vulnerable.
Obviously, the imagery of Aalst is totally intolerable, but apparently, there are some towns in eastern Germany that are just as bad.

This has been manufactured by the bigoted sect which is determined to equate us to hitlerism and see racism everywhere.

I've come late to this, but it appears Meghan has been hounded out of the country by racism. Any idea what's been said? Like pretty much everything else nowadays, anything that appears online, in print, on social media, regardless of proof or lack thereof, gets repeated and believed as gospel. I'm linking this article because it gives a good overview of what has been said in the press, with much of the negative stuff coming from the ever sleazy Daily Mail: apnews.com/1420bd1ff04ac8f330bdd9cf9d061e52Since everything about the British royal family will always be a source of fascination, a divorced American tv actress who is older than her prince charming and of mixed race was as fresh meat to the gossip mongers. Whether or not she was too thin-skinned about the scrutiny is up to you. This opinion piece suggests she might have tried harder to suck it up: www.inquirer.com/opinion/meghan-markle-racism-prince-harry-megxit-royal-20200116.html

I am personally thrilled to have absolutely no interest in the British royal family (or any other royal family). I wonder if anybody has ever calculated how much money is wasted on this subject. I do understand that the royals also generate considerable revenue, but is it useful revenue? I guess the main subject would be the influence of royalty on the national psyche. Beneficial or toxic? I have no idea.

I do not think it will take long for the media to lose interest here in Canada, as long as we (taxpayers) do not have to pay for their security or any other expenses, if we do, that will cause never ending news coverage. If they want to come and just live their lives, I think most Canadians will have little interest in them.

Thanks for that Bixa. In reading them I tend to think the 'truth' is somewhere in between. The incident with the monkey baby was a DJ, Danny Baker, who I remember being sacked but do understand the photo he posted was because of the mode of dress but somehow failed to see the monkey and what that would represent. A stupid mistake. Like K2 I have little interest in what the Royals get up to and that is why it caught my attention when the serious topic of racism popped up.

The second article Bixa posted about "I don't like Meghan Markle but I'm not racist" reminds me of those articles criticizing Israeli politics while saying "I'm not anti-semitic".
I don't care about the royal family either but do find it absurd for someone like this Flowers woman (2nd article) to say "I don't like Meghan Markle". Does she know her? Has she met her and been snubbed? We end up judging famous people/celebrities on the way they have been presented by news or social media. These probably have little to do with what these people are really like, especially when it's the British tabloid press which is particularly vicious.
