I have never managed to make rösti properly but have admired how my Swiss friends can do it so easily even when they drop into Paris. They consider it to be a dish for leftovers, just as the Chinese think of fried rice to be a use for uninteresting rice bits. Neither culture seems to understand our attraction to these items. (I should also add dahl, which, even though it is not a leftover, perplexes our Indo-Pakistani friends as something that we might desire -- they tend to be embarrassed by the need to eat it, since it is a dish only for the ultra poor.) I do have to admit that I prefer potato pancakes to rösti (except when my Swiss friends make it) if only because of the onion factor. Rösti does not have onions (or only marginally if they were in the leftovers), so actually it is quite similar to the American favourite of "hash browns." Actually, on the rare occasions that I manage to visit my favourite hypermarket in Luxembourg, I always buy several vacuum packages of German rösti for emergency meals. Even so, I never manage to cook the damned stuff correctly -- either burned or not cooked enough!

I made our son rosti last night using sweet potato. That burns really quickly if you don't watch it like a hawk.

Oh dear Cheery, it's that sugar content that burns! We shared a giant sweet potato (the purple skin and whitish flesh kind) last night with our BBQ - I shan't be allowed that any longer now that my blood sugar is through the roof.

Early lunch today at La Crepe on Alcalá. I enjoy the black & white pictures of Paris on the walls there and the fact that La Crepe conclusively proves that putting Mexican flavors into crepes is a very good idea. We got a sudden dip in the weather today, with clouds moving in over the mountains. The view from La Crepe was great ~

Yesterday (Sunday); camarones empanizados and a tropical tinged salad at Mariscos La Güera in Pátzcuaro. The place was jammed, and musicians were playing.

Today I had an open sandwich, 2 slices wholemeal bread taken from a 400g loaf. Lots of lovely salad, beautifuly rich grated mature cheddar cheese and a dollop of 1/2 fat coleslaw.

We were down at the beach yesterday and tried the three course lunch at a busy restaurant down in Uvongo, called Breakers. R139 - or, $11.93 or 9.60 euros, gets you a choice of about 8 starters and 10 mains, with four desserts. I started with beef fillet Trinchado(In a cream and Mozambique peri-peri sauce) & Mr.T had creamy mussels. Very delicious. Then I kept to beef and had a rump steak with a garlic sauce & vegetables, while my man had prawn & chicken curry. I finished with Creme Brulee` and he had Malva pudding. Both were outstanding.

Yes, Mark is absolutely right! Some can make it ....some just make it! The one we had for lunch at Breakers was the best I have ever had. I don't know if they will part with their secret ingredients but my gumm I am going to try and wrestle it from them! Basically it is a very intense wet sponge cake. Give me a few moments to Google the recipe: but I could get a better one from my Afrikaans friend who is a spectacular cook. The nearest English version would be 'Sticky Toffee Pudding' but Malva takes the Trophy in my book especially if made with dates.
The pudding’s name is derived from Malvacea wine from Madeira. The dessert and dessert wine used to be served together after main course at Cape tables. It is of distinct Cape Dutch origin with many unique additions which may differ from one area to the next eg. ginger, apricot jam. There are also many variants of this dessert namely the Cape Brandy Pudding which also include brandy and dates and the Tipsy Tart which contains only brandy.

the plan was just some instant soup with noodles shaped like knights and dragons, but then we spontaneously visited dad's wife, and so along with the soup we had some pizza, some bread with cheese and salad, and some marinated fish.

Thursday, at Pancho's Seafood, in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, a "cazuela" of chilled fresh mixed seafood, some cooked, some raw; all in a light, non-sweet broth, generously topped with fresh tomato, red onion and luscious avocado. I drank a "Rusa", nothing more than a goblet of carbonated mineral water with a touch of salt and fresh lime juice. I may get around to uploading photos, but there are several obstacles now.
