Mick, I'm still in Zambia. Mrs M and the daughter went to the cinema this lunchtime and I decided to call at an Indian cafe (I'd already waited for them at the hairdressers. No more than a glorified taxi me). More a cafe than a restaurant as the menu is limited but it does have a selection of dosas amongst other general dishes. Funnily enough it is located at a sports centre and I can imagine having a game of 5-a-side with your mates and then you don't have to go far for the compulsory beer/lager and curry. It actually tastes very good and I know and can see the cook is Indian.
The beginning of February though I'm off to Sri Lanka. I think I mentioned it at the end of my Zanzibar thread somewhere, maybe. In Lusaka are a wealth of Indian cafe's and restaurants and the majority are pretty good. My standard place is at a shopping centre where I tend to have a brunch of a thali - called "Curry in a Hurry"! Cost for the dosa was a bit less than 4 Euros and the thali I often have is 5 Euros.

I was hoping to go to Sri Lanka this year for cricket but not to be (unless the lottery. Comes up).

It can be cheap enough when you're there. Getting there is the expensive bit for sure. I'll be on average spending about £20 per night on a room.

I lunched with Don & Sra. Cuevas yesterday at a Moroccan restaurant. Maybe we'll get a report, since DonC took pictures. Maybe not, though, as the restaurant was pretty dark. The food was good, the company was lovely.

The food was good, the company was lovely. It was a lot of fun, but the photos, taken with an iPhone, are challenging. Apple's photo software has become less easy to use. My favorite photo apps no longer function. Thanks, Bixa, for suggesting the Moroccan restaurant.

Lunch today at Galanga Thai Kitchen, a (wait for it!) Thai restaurant in Mexico City's Colonia Roma Norte. Since only a couple of hours had passed since our large but protracted breakfast at Abarrotes Delirio, we limited ourselves to but two dishes. They were really good ones. The first was Galanga's version of "Larb", which is traditionally a well seasoned meat salad, but here it was loaded with plump, sweet shrimp. It had a zesty but refined herb and spice ensemble. Maybe I can post a picture. The next dish was a rice noodle based soupy dish of mixed seafood, whose name is as difficult to pronounce as it is to remember. We enjoyed this also even though it wasn't as delightfully picante as the larb. Note that this small restaurant is packed on weekends, and a reservation is strongly recommended. We were lucky to get a small table at the 1 o'clock opening.

Just coming up to lunch time here, and I think I shall have a variant on a dish I had in Austria a couple of summers ago: a potato cake with a layer of spinach on it and a fried egg on top. I made a supply of potato cakes for the freezer some time ago, but I've just realised I bought broccoli spears rather than spinach. But they'll do just as well. Lunch was almost vegetarian since I was just sautéeing some chopped Chinese green vegetables with a few carrots, but at the last minute I threw in a few anchovies.

Getting ready to eat lunch right now, even though it's technically breakfast since I got busy with stuff & haven't eaten yet today (1 pm). I'll probably waste away. Anyway, egg & avocado tacos.

Grandson had cricket training at Lords this morning and after we usually have lunch at Carluccios but it had closed! Mwe walked up the road in St Johns Wood to find something else and ended up in Harry Morgans, a Jewish restaurant and deli. The service was manic and awful. Our drinks order was totally forgotten and eventually got some food - i had chilli and rice which was nicely spiced but gloopy and George had a salt beef sandwich on rye. Lacking in salt beef ( 4 pieces for £11!) but the manager realising we were not happy came up with a plateful and apologies. Just 1 pickle with it. Good salt beef per George.
Checked reviews when we got home and the latest said the food was “indescribable filth”! Most of the recent reviews were similar.
Shant be returning!

Further to my lunch yesterday I noticed that nobody was drinking any alcohol (other than me) and wondered if it was because it was Friday?

I made potato pancakes, heavy on the onions and also with a lot of pili-pili and curry power. My grandmother probably rolled over in her grave.

What are potato cakes? They sound lovely, but I'm imagining all manner of things.
A very popular pizza al taglio in parts of Italy is potato and rosemary (or other herbs; I've also had sage). Very fine potato slices, get a bit crunchy.
Pizza al taglio means pizza by the slice, but they are rectangular slices of a slab of pizza, not wedges of a wheel.

I was aiming for something like rösti, but didn't come out quite as I'd hoped, so I called it potato cake: parboil baking potato till it's almost soft, grate it, and grate some onion to mix in with it, form into rounds and fry on both sides. I have a small (single egg size) frying pan which is just about right for this. You can do a mixture of potato and flour, which may be what most people think of as a potato cake; or there's a version called "farls" in Ireland ("tattie scones" in Scotland) that you can toast rather than fry. Sunday roast. Beef. Visible fat removed, seasoned, double wrapped in foil and baked. Steamed veg, dry roast potatoes (taste better than they sound), no fat gravy and tiny Yorkshire pudding (The others had three and a half each!). Surprisingly tasty.
Pudding made with quark, yogurt and jelly...very yummy, creamy and very low calorie. I'll put the recipe on the recipe thread because it's so easy to make.
