gravy should always be gravy coloured. Anything else is sauce. Gravy is sauce -- a particular kind of sauce, but sauce nonetheless. Red-eye gravy is actually very red if made properly from the liquid left over from frying ham and adding a bit of coca cola to it. (coffee is standard, but I like coke better) An important part of my favorite meal. Ham and red-eye gravy, beet greens and baby beets. cornbread and fried green tomatoes. . . .I skip the almost required grits. Sounds wonderful, although I probably wouldn't skip the grits since I don't get them very often. That sounds utterly ghastly. Deglace your pan with stock, not coffee. Coca-cola is a great toilet cleaner. That sounds utterly closed-minded, LaGatta! Admittedly, re-eye gravy is not something I grew up with, but I would love to try some good version of it. Basting ham with Coca-Cola is actually a classic recipe from the US south that has even migrated to the UK.

Does that recipe stem from prohibition or evangelical Christianity? I'd baste ham with white wine, or lemon and stock for those who avoid all alcohol (none would remain in the dish anyway). There is also brisket done in Coca-Cola in westernized Ashkenazi Jewish cooking.
I guess I only look upon Coca-Cola as a cleaning product. We did buy it for a friend who was on the wagon; we weren't about to impose more sophisticated, bitter alcohol-free beverages as he was very pleasant about taking part in suppers where wine and beer were drunk (though of course we were careful to keep it low-key).
After supper of course, the crud reverted to being a very effective cleaning product!
Oh well, another anyporter admonished me from drinking wine spritzers, though they are very common in Italy. À chacun son goût.

You have to be starving for half the night before for many tests so you are going to be a hungry man. I hope its all good news.
I had mussels twice on this holiday. First at Leon and decided they were rubbish. Then at a pub down on the Thames called The Blue Anchor. They were of a better quality and the cream sauce was flavorsome but too salty.

Indeed I was hungry. And the doc had work up to 2 pm. We ate at 2 30. With wine. I feel dizzy. Tonight more wine.

I had spaghetti with clams twice on our holiday in Italy, the first dish was full of empty clam shells with 3 measly bits at the bottom of the bowl, very disappointed. I decided to try again in a different city and was very pleased.
Today I had a piece of cheese. Battling a cold, no appetite. Will have soup for dinner.

There are cr*ppy restaurants everywhere. That first horrible one in Italy should go on some kind of blacklist.
You should have said "Fa schifo!" A general expression of disgust.
I still have practically no appetite. I had to run an errand at the other end of a nearby busline (buying TWO bérets)! I ate a small empanada from round the corner as I'd forgotten to eat breakfast, then went the whole day just on water, and stopped of chez a friend I'm housesitting for. Now I'm having a little bowl of soba noodles with some finely-shredded spinach and little pieces of smoked turkey. A balanced meal, but in miniature.
I deliberately put a small amount of fat rendered from the turkey in the bowl.

Oh Mich - you seem to have struck the same food disaster as we did. Not with clam dishes but with Italian cuisine in general. Sorry to hear you too have a bad cold. We are still coughing but not as much.

Salad and pizza Margarita Plus, at Pizza Mandala,s spacious new location in Pátzcuaro . That margarita Plus is similar to an italian Margherita Extra, which will vary from one pizzeria to the next but will be a Margherita with sliced tomatoes, or bufala mozz, or even anchovies?
