Not receiving mailings would be a big plus, Kimby. That doesn't seem to be the case with us in Florida. However, while I don't think we automatically receive ballot queries, we can choose to vote by mail in every election if we so wish.

The thing that surprises me is that there's a running report on actual results in early voting, well before anyone else starts voting. We don't even allow publication of exit polls until after the polls close, and all the counting starts then as well. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

I only received 3 reminders about absentee voting in September - all via email from an American political association based in Paris. I voted as soon as possible, so I wouldn't get any more news.
Does anyone else think that Trump is paying people to fill all those giant stadiums?
Trump's comments about Clinton, when he stood in front of 30-odd octogenarian decorated generals, was misogyny personified.
Ditto his offensive comments about black and Latino performers, whom he said he didn't need to fill up stadiums - all he needed was himself.

Yes, but he was also offensive to the generals, saying he knew more about - was it the Taliban or Daesh? - than the generals did.
I'd hate to be Trump's attending physician, or even his lawyer...
Yes, his misogyny, bigotry and general offensiveness are off the charts.

Patrick, I don't think it's actual results being reported, just what party affiliation the people who have turned in their ballots already might have previously declared. Or whether precincts with lots of early ballots are, for example, predominantly Latinos, which tend to vote Democratic. No actual voting results are reported till the polls close on the west coast, 3 hours after the east coast polls close.

Trump calls the military in general "losers", but somehow he rounded up those 30-odd generals who said they support him...probably for money.
Trump's middle son tweeted that the disruption in the crowd yesterday was "an out-and-out assassination attempt". The person involved was pulling a paper with a slogan on it out of his pocket, when someone yelled "GUN!!!" After he was questioned and released, he said that the people who jumped on him would probably have killed him, had the security guards not intervened. Time for the torches and pitchforks, folks.

To me this all sounds so open and 'out there' so little, and I suspect, NO rigging of votes are possible. Oh Africa, have you got a lot to learn. Yes, plenty to learn when we still have dead people that have been voting for years....

So, here we are at last. With a little luck, this thread will have run its course by the end of the week and we will just have a relieved and somewhat winsome smile on our faces.

Winsome??? I can't see me ever having a winsome smile...not unless it has the meaning of "win some, lose some"
But seriously folks, what in the world is happening? What will students say in history lessons 100 years hence? "this mighty country with all its know-how and resources could only find these 2 candidates to bring care for its citizens, wisdom and courage to the White House?"

I was wondering the same thing Questa - From what I see on TV & the papers, Obama seems to be a spring chicken compared to a lot of white-haired old men. Even Trump is too old. Where are the virile young men with fire in their veins? I think Hillary is of the most opportune age but I am still curious about her health issues. Frankly, if she thought they were very serious and would inhibit her running the country, I'm sure she would not stand for President.
Well I've got my fingers crossed it all goes Hillary's way.

Hillary is less than 2 years younger than Trump who is the oldest person to run for US president. (And I thought Reagan was old!)
Being a woman, Hillary has the actuarial charts in her favor. Trump doesn't LOOK healthy (too much junk food?), but doesn't smoke or drink (he says).
Hillary had the flu. It kept her down a couple days. Most of us are out for at least a week with the flu. Not surprising she felt weak at the 9/11 commemoration, but can you imagine the clamor if she'd skipped it? She also has hypothyroidism which is treatable. Otherwise she seems healthy as a horse. Her grueling schedule for the past 15 months is proof of her stamina.
I think she's good to go. (If a disappointed Trump supporter doesn't try to whack her...)

Well we will know the result here - 0500 am UK time if all goes to plan. I think I will get up early to find out and read the post mortem . I don't think that there has ever been a vote for US president that has interested me or scared me more.

I find the whole exercise very depressing, are these the best people available to stand to lead the most powerful country in the World? Thank goodness I won't live long enough to see the consequences.

Lugg, your last sentence probably sums it up nicely for the rest of the world as well. Has either candidate mentioned policies and how they will implement them? Or has it been just an exercise in mud-slinging and name calling.
I am reminded of a folk song by Gary Shearston in the 60s
If Governments think that it makes better sense To save on Education, spend more on Defence Then could easily be argued that on the same grounds Elections should be 'the best of 10 rounds' .....and it's on...

Mossie, I comforted myself with that thought when I sat for exams at the height of the Cuban missile crisis. "If I fail it doesn't matter. We will all be radio-active dust in a week anyway!"

Don't believe the hype, folks. Too much bullsh*t being passed off as truth. Hillary has extensive policy statements on her website. But the news outlets are more interested in keeping it a horse race - to keep their ratings high. The unfortunate side effect is that our electorate is sadly under-informed and misinformed.

Trump is doing better than expected. It won't be the blowout we needed to give the winner a mandate. We will be lucky if we aren't looking at recounts.
And I have to go to bed early to get up early and fly off to Sanibel to recover from this long campaign.

Has it been officially declared? No, but when I looked a few mintues ago, Trump was ahead in electoral college votes by a pretty big margin. He only needed another 26 votes there. First we had Brexit, now Trump. The next horrible thing to happen is that Marine le Pen (French far right) is elected next year. To be fair, in France, presidential election turnout is high and if the past is anything to go on, if she makes it to the second round, everyone but her supporters will turn out to vote for the other candidate. This is what happened when her father made it to the second round in 2002.

Not officially, but the New York Times headline is "Trump is closing in on a stunning upset". It is very upsetting, also in terms of the world economic system. I had a nightmare and woke up, and have to get back to sleep as I have to finish a job tomorrow morning... bjd, I hope you are right about Le Pen fille. She has "branded" herself better than Old Le Pen, she is less openly racist, more "dog whistles" for the faithful. Musician Ted Nugent has been far less subtle: www.rightwingwatch.org/post/trump-to-close-out-campaign-by-rallying-with-ted-nugent-of-course/

Trump will be just a figurehead. Mike Pence will guide the country with his unerring born-again Christian faith, and the Supreme Court will overthrow Roe v Wade, equal rights for marriage, etc.
Though it is entirely possible that nothing whatsoever will be accomplished, since Trump has pissed off the majority of the Republican Party.
Thought it was nice of Putin to call and congratulate Trump just after Hillary conceded.

One thing I am a little pleased about...though I did not want Trump to win, I am glad the honour of 'First woman President' is for someone who would not get the position by hanging onto the coat-tails of a former President husband. I hope when she comes it will be up through the ranks of the common people and into the White House on her own merit.
But as for Trump...God save America!

Well, I guess the Americans have spoken. That's what they wanted and that's what they got. I wanted Hillary in the White House and believe this may be the end of her political career. I doubt she will ever run for president in the future. My husband is less worried about Trump. He thinks Trump is going to put his money where his mouth is. Won't it be a shock for the world, never mind America, if he turns out to be as good a president as Reagan was.
