Trump is an idiot. How on earth did he get to be so rich? Property development - which, if you choose your projects carefully, only requires sheer gall and flim-flam to make money out of even greater self-obsessed fantasists. Or the desperate. He may be an idiot, but there are even bigger buffoons in the race who make Trump look semi-normal.

A very funny quote I read this morning (don't know if it's accurate but, fitting nonetheless,)
" I've got to tell you, these Mexican hurricanes, they're not sending their best. It's a total disaster, OK? We're going to build the most amazing hurricane wall to keep them out of the U.S.. Believe me,people are going to be very impressed by this wall,I can tell you."
Guess who?

Here's an interesting idea from Rand Paul.
WASHINGTON, Nov 19 — US Senator Rand Paul, a Republican presidential hopeful, called for a halt yesterday to the visa waiver programme for travelers from countries including France in the wake of the Paris attacks.
The measure is far from becoming law, but it has the potential to disrupt a multi-billion-dollar tourism industry and could set back ties with Europe even as Washington vows greater counterterrorism cooperation with its allies.
“My concern is that French citizens who have great hostility for civilization, your government and peace, have the same great hostility for us, (and) that they could get on a plane and come here,” Paul told AFP.
Several of the assailants in Friday’s attacks that left 129 people dead were French nationals.
The first-term senator from Kentucky introduced a bill Monday that would require a 30-day waiting period for all travelers to the United States to allow time for US authorities to conduct background checks.

Today is Election Day for a new Governor of Louisiana. Outgoing (YAY!!!) Governor Bobby Jindal (who finally dropped out of US Presidential race) will be replaced by either former US Senator David Vitter (R),(BOO!!!!) or, hopefully Democrat John Bel. I wish I could be hopeful.....

Will hope for the best, casimira. I have a new diet aide that could be added to the weight loss thread. I watched one hour of Barbara Walters interviewing Donald Trump and his family last night on 20/20.

In short, what power has a Governor? What can he do and not do? It's not a purely ceremonial post I know. But how powerful is the position?

I'm sure Casimira will have lots to say on the topic, but let me just say that governors can ruin your state. Decisions made by our republican governor and our republican legislators have destroyed our educational system and decimated our water resources, just to mention two areas where the state of Florida is in crisis.

The governor's office is very powerful. He/She is responsible for everything from the signing or vetoing of bills introduced to the state legislature,commander- in- chief of the state's military, accounting for all public monies, taxes, and the state budget, granting of pardons and paroles and much more. Kind of like a mini president of the state.
This particular election was a huge upset since Louisiana is predominately Republican. I really thought at best, it would end up being a runoff.
(Thanks Lizzy!!!)

Only Mark, the USA is a federal state - that means Governors of states have far more power than any head of an English region (I'm deliberately NOT mentioning Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland). Canada is also a federal state, though as you know, we follow your Westminster parliamentary system. The Presidential system in the US and in many other countries in the Americas gives much more power to the executive than is the case under Westminster.
The news media here are in a flurry about Trump's comment about banning (!) Muslims. Not that I'd ever play down the horror of terror attacks (and a facility for disabled people is a new low, if that could be possible), but it seems blackly humorous considering that there was another terror attack in Colorado Springs just a few days before the San Bernadino killings, carried out by a Christianist terrorist.

On a completely tangential note, Trump is lending his name to a development company that is building a huge tower and hotel in Vancouver. A petition has started to ban them from naming the building after him. Good luck with that, I say!

I can only hope that others do follow in suit. This OP started off with how American elections can be funny. I find myself reticent to post in here because I really don't find any of the vast majority of posts funny at all.(Not a criticism, more of a disclaimer to ease my conscious)

No. It's not funny at all.
Google the mayor of Philly if you want to hear a mayor call trump an asshole in front of a group of religious leaders. I love the backlash against trump, but I also think he's someone the Dems can beat if he were to be the Rep nominee.

There's a UK petition of 100,000 to have him banned from the UK.
The Mayor of London says there are parts of NY he wouldn't visit in case he met Trump......

It gives me the creeps to even walk near the Trump Tower in NYC, BUT I have also delighted in taking advantage of the toilets at the Trump Soho when in need. :-)

The thing about Trump is that he flatters his audience. Clearly these people who need flattering are ignorant and lacking in self esteem. And, I suspect he loves the publicity be it negative or positive.
A childhood friend of mine who I stay in contact with has worked for Trump at one of his golf courses in West Palm Beach. He is the oldest employee there (in terms of longevity at the job, not chronologically). He has been treated well and made good money. When I last spoke with him a couple of weeks ago he indicated that he is preparing to retire/quit. This will mean that he will lose out on retirement benefits but,he said he doesn't care. I saw him while on our holiday to NY and we spent a couple of days together. Several of the places we went, old haunts, we ran into a number of people who immediately launched into any and every conceivable reference to him working for Trump. Gratefully, no one was downright hostile but I felt very badly for him in that he couldn't go anywhere without being associated with the asshole.

I think it's really too soon to tell Mick in that the election is another 11 months away. Anything could happen in the interim. In the meantime we have to endure a seemingly never ending barrage of frightening and appalling main stream media fed crap. Trump is presenting himself as a demagogue and he doesn't care who he offends.

A most disconcerting episode indicative of the aforementioned "entertainment" that some people seem to derive from Trump's , what to call them,"appearances"? took place while I was in line at the grocery store earlier this evening. Two women were comparing tweets or Youtubes of Trump and laughing uncontrollably at what to me were offensive, heinous, oh, I don't know what other adjectives to use to express my absolute overall dismay. I so wished I was an ancient woman with an ebony walking stick that I could "accidentally" thrash them with...
