There is a large segment of the American population that is ignorant and proud of it. These are the ones who are entertained by the Great Bloviator. I certainly do not count myself among them.

Omission of the word "us" would be a good start.
I have for the most part respected your political views Kimby but, some posts really get my gander up.
And, I try and shy away from expressing too many of my political views mainly because I don't feel I can intelligently post what I don't have accurate knowledge of.

Sorry if my offhand comment struck you or anyone else as inappropriate or offensive. I should've added " present company excluded" at the end of my statement! Apology accepted?

But of course Kimby. I have been in such a state of dismay of late with all these terrible things happening both here and abroad. Then, to have this bumbling idiot sucking up air space every time I turn on the radio or TV and fueling the fire of hatred. It's frightening and disconcerting for lack of a better word.
We're good, no worries.

At least Trump has not yet gotten 40% of the votes as these nice ladies from FN in France.
I quite liked the links to the mayors - thanks for posting it, it is both refreshing and encouraging.

Well, so far nobody has voted for Trump at all -- there hasn't been an election, or even a primary for the Republicans, yet. The USA does go on with their presidential elections for so long though. Maybe that's why turnout is often so low? People are just sick and tired of hearing about it.

One advantage to living in a backwater state like Montana is that no candidates or SuperPACs find it worthwhile to advertise in our state, and we are not bombarded with polling calls. By the time our primary rolls around, the candidates will most likely already have been selected.
Why should voters in Iowa and New Hampshire with their early primaries have an out-sized influence on who the candidates are?
We should have a national primary with an automatic runoff. That would fix a lot of what is broken with America's election system. Only serious candidates need apply. And even better, make it non-partisan.

I found a great remark on another forum about Trump's ideas : 'assuming he really does believe what he says, rather than just opening his mouth and waiting to hear what comes out'
Just loved the comment and wanted to spread it.

It was only until I was introduced and became a fan of The West Wing TV series did I really truly understand the process you allude to Kimby. I say understand but in essence do not see how this process is productive or cogent in how our country goes about electing someone with so much power and influence. It truly baffles me.

Go figure.... And, this former governor just won't go away.... Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has said she has a "political crush" on Marion Marechal-Le Pen of France's National Front (FN). Ms Palin, writing for the conservative news website Breitbart, described the Frenchwoman as "a clear voice of courage and common sense in a country and continent in need of both". The young far-right candidate reminded her of Joan of Arc, she said.BBC News

Does Sarah Palin even know who Joan of Arc was before she was co-opted by the National Front? Marion Maréchal-LePen is "a clear voice of courage and common sense..."!!

Any chance of burning Marion ? I can't stand her. She says she fights for the people who have to work hard. Ok
She comes from a wealthy family and has been catapulted inside politics because Because what ? She is good looking ? Pffffff

Because she is part of the LePen family. It must be soemthing genetic that makes their brains turn so far to the right. Or just the nonsense they heard from old LePen over the years.

reminds me of the Bush family.....or, one could argue the Kennedy family. At least there are a lot fewer of them, but of course, they are more radical. And maybe a bit more colourful. In 1987, Le Pen's wife was in the midst of divorcing him and posed naked (or maybe just wearing an apron, if I recall) in Playboy. She had left the family in 1984. She also wrote a tell-all book which was supposed to come out after the presidential election of 1988. A whole family history of divorces, fatherless children, etc. But all on the far right.

Honestly,I really don't have a problem with politicians personal lives unless it does interfere with their governance. As in the case of David Vitter, who recently lost the gubernatorial race here, at the same time touting a platform on "family values" when everyone knew he was soliciting prostitutes. The hypocrisy is what gets me. The whole Bill Clinton scandal, ok, I think most people knew he was a philanderer, but, I don't believe it interfered with his role as a US president.

I agree with you, Casimira (though I think Clinton made some very stupid mistakes). I don't really want to know about a politician's personal life, unless it might somehow interfere with his/her ability to properly govern. I do think there are a whole slew of hypocrites who seem to be attracted to politics.

Talk about hostages to fortune. I understand Trump criticised one of his rivals over some personal issue, with the words "You don’t want to be running and have that kind of thing over your head.” My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

The Dems should put out a commercial that shows OTHER candidates, both Democratic and Republicans speaking the words that Trump says, then gradually morph into a clip of The Donald actually saying those obnoxious things.
People are so blinded by hatred for the opposing party's candidates, that they'll probably believe the "enemy" said those things, then have their world turned upside down when they realize the candidate they've been lionizing says such hateful stupid stuff.
I can dream, can't I?

It was Trump's first commercial. Is this what you posted? Yes that was it but without the editorial comment beforehand. Fact checkers have already pointed out that the footage of "running Mexicans" is actually a video from Morocco.
