Here is a private message that I unearthed when Anyport was only 3 months old:
Allow me to greet all of you and express my appreciation for your interest in Any Port in a Storm.
It has been 3 months since the site became reality. Many of you have thoughtfully and consistently kept this place lively with your posts. Others prefer to peruse the offerings without contributing for the moment, but that is perfectly acceptable. I have been told that our nascent renown has spread to several other locations on the internet, and I have myself seen a multitude of guests visiting the site in addition to the registered members present. New members are arriving daily, and I encourage them to add their stories and perhaps their photographs whenever they feel comfortable in doing so.
In the first 90 days, numerous posts have come to my notice:
BazFaz provided a remarkable illustrated travel journal of his visit to Egypt (1), including dust and frustration. This is the quality to which we aspire, but modest beginnings are appreciated just as much.
Egypt has proved to be a source of inspiration to others, and Kerouac2 provided a look at the Cairo of twenty years ago (2).
Coptic Egypt and Alexandria have also been displayed on the Africa board (3).
On a lighter note, it has also been possible to take a test from 1957 (4) and revisit some items that have caused people to smile on the Comix board (5).
It is impossible to cite all of the noteworthy elements in a short message, but there is something for everyone, such as a discussion of film remakes (6), as well as the promising beginning of the evolution of a garden (7), explained with diligence by Spindrift.
The drama of a homely vegetable is given a moment of glory (8) but attention is also paid to more exotic gastronomic items (9) in our Dockside Dining section.
These are just some samples of the offerings of Any Port. There are some subjects of topical pertinence which can be discovered immediately and others which can be discovered and appreciated at a later date, such as the hutongs in Beijing (10), as evoked by Jazz with enthusiasm. No travel is complete without a certain number of mishaps (11), but you can also try to avoid certain problems by obtaining some practical travel advice (12).
As this is being written, there are already more than 1,000 topics on display, and there will soon be 17,000 posts to examine. I encourage both new members and those who have been here from the beginning to peer into every byway and alley of the Port. There will always be some surprises and, I hope, something for everyone.
Thank you for taking an interest in the site.
