It's incredible that you can't find a place to recycle glass. The problem is how far we Montanans are from a market for glass. The cost of transporting glass to someplace that CAN use our glass far exceeds the ambition of the recycling companies to do the right thing. Though they still pay for aluminum cans, our recycler no longer buys cardboard since all the paper mills anywhere near here have closed. We can still recycle cardboard, newspaper, office paper, magazines aluminum and tin cans and some plastics (all #1 PETE, and translucent #2 = milk jugs), but I have to visit two different recycling centers to get rid of all of it. So I rinse everything and gather all my recyclables for months before sorting and loading it into the car, so we can have our garage back for awhile.

Balky internet isnβt letting me see the images in your links, Bixa, but Iβm watching the Tony Awards live, so seeing a lot of fashions.
Iβve been on the edge of my seat each time a very large woman in a very low necklined gown comes up to accept her award, afraid her βgirlsβ were going to come spilling out.

The Kimbys watched 2 more Oscar-nominated pictures this week: Women Talking and The Fablemans. WOMEN TALKING takes place in a Mennonite Colony in which women and girls have been assaulted in their beds after being drugged with animal tranquilizers. They meet in a hayloft (while the menfolk are out bailing out the perpetrators) to discuss how to respond as a group: do nothing, stay and fight, or leave. The dialog is thought-provoking and Rooney Mara really shines in her role. www.imdb.com/title/tt13669038/Despite Bixaβs decidedly unenthusiastic review of THE FABLEMANS, I watched it with an open mind. It was a fun look at the origin story of the world-famous director Stephen Spielberg that I felt was worth watching, though I wish it had followed him a little further than dropping out of college his freshman year. I was skeptical of the portrayal of the family dynamic - too much boisterous fun! - but there were some good performances. I loved the pretty cheekiness of our Jewish leadβs Jesus-loving girlfriend, and the brief appearance of Judd Hirsch was worth the price of admission. I cringed at Michelle Williamsβ portrayal as the wife and mother, but I have known someone that was almost like her, and was similarly torn between two men. The actors portraying the two men did not overplay it, but the looks on their faces as they watched the woman they both loved were heartbreakingly real. Seth Rogen totally disappeared into his character. The home movies young Sammy/Stephen created with rented and borrowed cameras and editing equipment were really fun to watch being made. Yes, I liked it. Didnβt love it, but definitely worth my time. www.imdb.com/title/tt14208870/

Looking for a place to recycle glass, which is hard to do here anymore, I learned that Missoula has a βRage Room and itβs called βUnhingedβ. You can smash glass to your heartβs content for $25 to $75 dollars. Or book a private 2 hour rage party for 10 of your angriest friends. unhingedmissoula.com/I passed on taking my glass here because they DONβT recycle the smithreens. Instead, I donated $30 to give my accumulated bottles and jars to a nonprofit that crushes and hauls glass to Salt Lake City where it IS recycled. I had 6 boxes of glass, each about the size of a 5-gallon pail. Their suggested donation is $1 per gallon., but they take it even if you canβt afford the donation. (Many of the bottles are litter that I pick up while walking at the lake.)

I missed the beginning of this discussion, and am wondering why you need a British passport, tod. Does it give you options a South African passport does not? Is it for security reasons? How serious is it if all your efforts fail?

RIP pianist George Winston. From his Facebook page: We are deeply saddened to share the news that George Winston has passed on after a 10-year battle with cancer. George quietly and painlessly left this world while asleep on Sunday, June 4, 2023. George courageously managed serious cancers, including having a successful bone marrow transplant for Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) in 2013 at City of Hope, in Duarte, California, that gratefully extended his life by 10 years. Throughout his cancer treatments, George continued to write and record new music, and he stayed true to his greatest passion: performing for live audiences while raising funds for Feeding America to help fight the national hunger crisis along with donating proceeds from each of his concerts to local food banks. Across an illustrious career spanning more than 50 years, Georgeβs music first became known and loved by his fans with the release of his two most iconic albums, Autumn (1980) and December (1982). George's recordings evolved with the times while garnering a GRAMMY Award for Forest (plus five GRAMMY nominations) and selling over 15 million albums. George touched the hearts of generations with his acclaimed solo acoustic piano compositions. From his early days in Montana, Mississippi and Florida, to his later life living in the San Francisco Bay Area and touring to cities worldwide, Americaβs beautiful landscapes and natural seasons shaped his singular instrumental folk piano. With 16 solo piano albums to his name, George recorded brilliant piano music, which includes tribute recordings for Vince Guaraldi, The Doors, a Hurricane Katrina relief benefit, Gulf Coast and Louisiana Wetlands benefits, September 11 benefit, a cancer research benefit for City of Hope, the Peanuts episode βThis Is America Charlie Brown: The Birth Of The Constitution,β among others. Georgeβs legacy includes his beloved catalog as well as an archive of his own acoustic guitar and harmonica recordings, and albums by an array of Hawaiian slack key artists on his own record label, Dancing Cat Records. George is pre-deceased by his parents, George and Mary Winston, and is survived by his sister, niece and nephew. The family of George Winston will hold a private memorial service. Eagles are known scavengers, often getting hit by cars when feeding on road killed animals.
The fish they are eating are probably ones that died under the ice from low oxygen levels, mixed with fish that didnβt survive being caught and released. Large rainbow trout, mostly, though some spawning Kokanee salmon may be in the mix too. The water is very cold and the air temps have been low since the ice went out on the 18th, so little decay would have taken place.
So theyβre eating a mix of carrion and recently dead fish. Though I suspect the recently dead ones are more appealing, and we can watch them pull chunks of fish flesh off and swallow them whole.

βConvocationβ We have had 7-10 eagles visit our shore this morning to feed on large trout that died over the winter. I was posting a photo on Facebook and wanted to use the proper name for a group of eagles. Turns out itβs a convocation. Not unlike a parliament of owls, I guess.

We are three episodes into The Offer, a 10-part miniseries that tells the story of the making of the film The Godfather. Well-cast, well-acted and a fascinating look into how a movie gets made. Or almost doesnβt get made. Now I want to see The Godfather again. www.imdb.com/title/tt13111040/Edited to add that we have seen 3 more episodes and we LOVE this miniseries! The characters are great, the storytelling is riveting, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and the show seems to have mostly followed the true story as Wikipedia reports it. I hope others of you will seek this one out, itβs that good.

Last night I watched a brilliant biopic. HALLELUJAH!Β It's a treatise on the evolution of the Leonard Cohen song of the same name. Footage that covers a span of decades all the way up until his death. (It's almost 2 hours long). Well worth viewing. Available on NETFLIX.Β The Kimbyβs borrowed the DVD from the library and watched it tonight. Wow. I was always aware of Leonard Cohen, and even sang his Suzanne when I was in high school, but this documentary gave me a new appreciation for him. Not only as a poet and musician, but also as a human being.
