Too bad Gordon, whom I always thought a decent and serious man, will never really escape Tony's shadow.

Staying in the 19th arrondissement, I noticed both halal and kosher corned beef in the respective aisles of a nearby smallish supermarket, with prominent NO PORK lettering. No surprise that corned beef, like Spam and other tinned meats, has a long military history... www.mashed.com/627381/the-untold-truth-of-canned-corned-beef/But I roasted a good-sized thigh/drumstick of organic turkey, so between that and my chili, I won't have to go that salty route. And yes, I'm saving the bones for soup.

biddy, pigs' trotters were a constant in rural and working-class Québec for the same reasons they were in similar Irish households.
I rarely eat mammalian meat at home - if I'm invited somewhere, I certainly eat a reasonable portion of most things to be courteous - but a grocery I like had organic minced pork at a very good price so I bought a good portion. It became something similar to a chili (chile?, chilli?)with some lentilles du Puy I had cooked and other ingredients. It is delicious.

The only positive aspect of that tragic story is the fact that people not only in Morocco and the Maghreb but throughout the world cared about the boy and the story and extended condolences to his family.

Does someone know how to correct an error in the Pati Jinich bio (at her website and the wikipedia entry)?
Jinich was born and raised in Mexico City in a Jewish Mexican family, and is the youngest of four sisters. Her grandparents were Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe. Her maternal grandfather, who established a silver business in Mexico, came from Bratislava during World War II. Her grandmother, a seamstress, left her home near Vienna for New York before moving to Mexico.
Bratislava and Vienna are both in Central Europe.

I got jab no 3 in a nearby community centre this morning. Indeed the anti-vaxxers make a lot of noise but are a small minority.

Restaurant owners and staff in my neighbourhood also hold a sock drive. Of course people also donate money. Homeless people go through a lot of socks and often develop serious foot problems if they wear damp ones and nowhere to keep them clean and dry.

Thanks, fumobici, I remember them if we crossed the border. In eastern Ontario at least, those things were called milk shops or stores, and didn't have such long hours, and here in Québec we had dépanneurs, some of which became major chains:
7-Eleven is similarly absent from the Quebec market due to its saturation by chains like Alimentation Couche-Tard and Boni-soir, and by independent dépanneurs. (wikipedia)

We had almost no snow last winter, and it never got seriously cold. Many times above 0c, up 10 or 12. We have a cold snap now and although I'm far better in most respects than a year ago, I still can't stand deep cold. The horrible cold will peak tomorrow and should be over by Wednesday. There still isn't much snow.
Don't get me wrong, there are many things - and people - that I love in Montréal. But winter isn't one of them.

Yes indeed, Poitier was Bahamian. You can imagine his significance in a small island nation. I also loved To Sir With Love as a girl.

C.R.A.Z.Y. was important to me as I saw it with a gay friend who grew up in a village in rural Québec. His dad threw him out the door (and beat him up) when he suspected that G. wasn't a "normal boy". The music was good too. I was never interested in his later Hollywood films, but then I'm not anywhere as much a cinéphile as K2...

Rules have good reasons (nobody wants to be a gutter drunk) but they are also made to be broken, for example in the interest of gastronomy.
Cheers!

Whatagain, where would you suggest for mussels in Brussels? Nothing fancy, but less of a factory than Léon.

Then of course we see the just as traditional rivalries between neighbouring countries. Kuru fasulye - I've had that bean dish, but made by Greeks, and I'm sure it is also found, with slight changes, in the Balkans and the Levant.

There's also this wonderful, over-the-top sentimental number, My mother's eyes.
He is playing an instrument rather different from a western violin.
