a. and i watched the boy and the heron today - i thought kerouac had already reviewed it but can't find the post now ... i didn't realize that they were showing it in japanese with english subtitles in that cinema, so it was kind of a new experience for a., in the first half of the movie there is not that much talking, but there were still quite a few words she probably didn't know ...
we both enjoyed it, though i thought it was a bit different from the other miyazaki movies i know (though at the same time also typical, a lot of recognizable things). some very quiet parts and in the beginning, kind of slow moving (but not in a bad way) ... in a's opinion it is not as good as spirited away or princess mononoke but still not bad. i supoose i agree ...

A very good idea indeed. Hope Agnes had a lot of fun ! How old is she now Rikita ? yes, she and the other kids had lots of fun. she is eleven, now ... the movie theater is more than ten times as old, on the other hand, and one of the oldest still in use in germany. it was recently in danger of having to close down, i think due to financial issues, but this could be averted ...

last visit to the cinema is already a few weeks ago, for a's birthday - we booked a room there for an hour to celebrate, and then had an "animation workshop" (the kids drew pictures on film, each kid had 24 frames, and then it was all stuck together and was shown as a short film before the actual movie ... we had a small tour of the cinema, too (just the popcorn machine and the room from where the movie is shown) - and then a movie of a's chosing (she chose something from their archive a few weeks beforehand, and they took it into their official program of the day - there were other people, too, so they also saw the short "film" the kids made) ... she chose the first checker tobi movie (checker tobi and the secret of our planet), as we had seen the second one a few months ago, but had never seen the first one ...

It looks like a movie I would like to see. IMdB says it came out in France in February, but I have no recollection of it. One of the reviews says this about it! i hadn't heard about it at all until my friend suggested to see it with the kids ... and true, it is not scary at all ...

just read a bit about it, and at least according to wikipedia, especially the story of the second expedition and rescue mission is actually more itneresting than in the movie - but i suppose would not work for a movie for children ...

Today, we watched the norwegian movie "Titina", which is kind of different to the animation movies we usually see - a lot slower moving story, and since it is a true story, they mixed in some original film sequences ... I have some mixed thoughts - in general, i liked the movie, it was interesting, makes me want to read up on the story now. Some of it was a bit odd, and I am not the biggest fan of the drawing style ... There were several smaller kids in the cinema, a. and her friend were the oldest, and I wonder how much the younger kids understood (then again, I suppose kids often just focus on whatever is interesting to them, so they might just follow more the story of the dog than that of the grudge of the two men.
The story is about Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile - Amundsen asks Nobile to build an airship and fly to the North Pole with him, and Nobile takes along his little dog Titina. All seems to go well, except it seems to Nobile that Amundsen wants to keep all the glory of their succesful expedition to himself, so later they fight and insult each other through newspaper articles. Nobile then builds another airship to prove that he can do the journey without Amundsen ...
Reading a bit about it, apparently Titina (who became quite famous) once wet the carpet in the White House (they did not show that in the movie) ...

Looks exciting. Did both of you enjoy it? yes, a. wants to see his first movie now, too - i booked her birthday celebration in the same cinema, and that one is mentioned as one of the options for the movie we can book (we only need to decide a couple of weeks before the birthday, though) ...

the "checker"-series is a popular series of short educational documentaries for kids, with one person checking out a topic interesting to kids. there are several people presenting the documentaries, the most popular one is "checker tobi" - a few years ago there was a movie featuring him, and recently, another movie came out, and that's the one a. and i went to see yesterday: "checker tobi und die reise zu den fliegenden flüssen" (checker tobi and the journey to the flying rivers) - the story is that checker tobi gets a mysterious parcel with a riddle from an old friend and starts traveling the world to find out about the world's greatest treasure, and due to that gets to meet different people and see different places which all have a connection to that treasure (a hint: the treasure is invisible). so it's a mixture of a fictional story and a documentary ...

the one we saw before that, a few months ago, was quite silly too, but apparently not as embarrassing, as we went with a whole bunch of her friends ... it is a kind of musical, though you don't see that in the trailer, and not all kids were fond of the singing, so they started groaning and complaining loudly each time someone broke out in song (the songs all sounded the same, btw.)

already a couple of weeks ago: a. decided she wanted to see paw patrol mighty pups. did not want her class mates to know about it, though ... well, of course a very silly movie, but she had fun and i think it is better she likes movies for younger kids than if she'd constantly try to be cool and grown up like some kids in her class (though she also likes some movies for older kids, of course) ...
but yeah, it is very very silly ...

Okay, with a certain amount of trepidation, I went to ingest 181 minutes of Oppenheimer today. I found it to be a spy movie attached to a courtroom drama with a little slice of science stuck in the middle. And yes, it was too long, even though it was brilliantly acted. It's an important subject, but the people who need to see this sort of movie never will. my 18 year old brother really liked that movie; he's seen it twice so far and is planning to go see it a third time ...

The Romanian animated film The Island is everything that animation should be, with no limits and no need to follow a logical story line. Robinson lives alone on an island in the Mediterranean. He helps migrants trying to cross the sea. One day he saves Friday, the only survivor of his shipwreck. But there is also a pirate, a mermaid and merciless Mother Nature. All sorts of trash floats on the sea, and there are radar dishes and strange contraptions on land. They go off on various adventures, leaving Friday to fend for himself. He grows magnificent tomatoes which always get stolen by an evil capitalist. So he goes on the sea himself to help migrants. Should I mention that it is a sort of musical but not really? with ada milea ... could hear her voice in the trailer ...

What makes me wonder about masks is that, 1) the person might have recently been exposed to Covid, but not yet tested positive. Or not tested at all. 2) The person might actually have an active case of Covid, but feel well enough to be out and about. And 3) the person is getting over a case of Covid. they could also be suffering from some kind of social anxiety and found out during the times of general mask wearing that they feel better hiding their face ...

99 Moons is a Swiss movie which leaves little to the imagination. Bigna is a seismologist who has somewhat peculiar sex cravings. She recruits Frank on the internet to assault her in a parking lot wearing a hockey mask. She wrestles him down and sits on his face, writhing until she reaches orgasm. Frank is so shocked that he cries. Even though she wants a new guy every time, before long Bigna and Frank just can't keep away from each other. He works in a club where everybody wears headphones for the music but it is otherwise totally silent. She uses him various ways for her pleasure, but it is a while before he finally gets to stick it in her. 99 moons is about 8 years, so their relationship comes and goes, their jobs change, their looks change, but their uncontrollable attraction persists, even if Frank sometimes has to relieve himself while masturbating with a suffocation cord around his neck. And Bigna doesn't want to let him pee when they are taking a bath together. Happiness is elusive. funnily, when i watched the trailer i concentrated so much on the subtitles, i didn't hear what language it is. and then i wondered and watched it again and realized it is german ...

The group were among the few people unmasked on the flight and I was literally surrounded by them on the plane as they laughed and talked nearly in my face for ten hours. well, then it is quite likely you got it from one of them, but you can't be 100 % certain, i guess ... (i was just asking, because in your post it sounded like you knew you got it from them, so i was wondering if something specific made you sure, like someone actually saying they have it ...)

I knew I would hate the new Astérix and Obélix movie because I hated all of the other ones. But since I am known to be a moviegoer, it would be dishonest to boycott what might turn out to be the biggest French success of the year. So I bit the bullet and went to see it. (I will repeat once again that it is easier to bite the bullet when you don't actually have to buy a ticket -- my unlimited card has brought the cost of seeing a film to less than one euro.) Anyway, the movie has about 10 French stars in it but is packed with small roles for famous pop stars and Youtubers to ensure the presence of the younger generation. And then there is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Why? Oh dear... interesting, the trailer is completely different from the one they show in theaters here. agnes currently likes reading the asterix comic books ... she hasn't said she wants to see the new movie, so far (though i guess she wouldn't mind, either) ... i might watch some of the old cartoons with her - they are silly, too, but silly works differently in cartoons ...

I thought Penélope Cruz was fantastic in the movie and all of the other actors were good, but I found that I had little sympathy/empathy for the family, perhaps because it feels to me like trans children have already been overdone in a very short period of time. hm, you watch a lot more movies than me, of course, i can only think of maybe four or five movies about trans children ... and a keyword search on imdb for "transgender child" gives me 52 results, while keywords like "murder" get over 30.000, "dog" over 20.000, "redhead girl" 163 etc. ...

well, here, now, there are almost no rules anymore - you don't have to isolate when you have covid, the only places that still require masks and/or tests are places like homes for the elderly etc. ... well, and if there are suddenly a lot of cases in a school class (like, in agnes' class it was six kids last week) they send the whole class home, though this might actually be an individual decision of schools or teachers ... i was surprised, btw, when i picked up a. on thursday, after her teacher called, that only about five kids were still there, waiting for their parents - i suppose people have become more flexible, too, more work from home, and it has become more normal that you have to improvise (also in other situations, like teacher strikes etc.) ...

a friend who was with us on our skiing trip last week contacted me today that she has covid, so i did a test, and i have it, too. very mild so far, though, i wouldn't even have done a test had she not told me (i do have some symptoms, but since i had a cold for a while, with negative tests, i assumed it is just still the same cold - it felt today like the symptoms got slightly worse, but i think that might just have been psychological) ... a. is fine so far, just bored when she is not at school and i don't have time because i am working ...

a. had awaited the new "puss in boots" movie very eageerly - it started here last thursday and as we had the afternoon off, we went to the movies right the first day to watch it. lots of silliness, of course, but it was fun. it's rated fsk 6 in germany - and i saw many children under six. wondered a bit how the movie experience was for those kids - not only is the story a bit confusing (but i suppose kids don't necessarily care about not understanding it all), and the cuts of course very fast, but there were some parts that i would imagine are quite scary for a small child. but a. of course is not that small anymore, and she loved it ...

today, agnes and i watched "the tiger's nest" (or "ta'igara - an adventure in the himalayas") - which is a bit of a change from the animation movies we usually watch. i liked a lot about it - the landscapes of course and different people and their lifes in nepal (of course only a bit, as it is just one short movie) ... and the tiger ... a few things bothered me - the acting seemed a bit wooden, but that might be due to the synchronisation (which is less of a problem with animation movies, of course, for live action movies i usually prefer seeing it in the original language), and the "bad guy" was a bit clichéd and other than starting off the story, they could have left him out altogether, actually would have made the movie nicer ... and the scenes in the monastary in the end seemed a bit like, not sure how to call it, but the monks saying to the boy "thank you for reminding us how this all started here" and all that ... ah, and the woman from the orphanage - well, not sure, but somehow her character bothered me a bit, too (and that they named her as the only white person of the movie first in the credits, when she wasn't really the main character) ... but despite all this, i enjoyed the movie and it's a good starting point to learn a bit about nepal together with agnes (and about tigers) ... oh, and of course it was interesting to see sunny pawar as a teenager ...

I plan to see it but France and Disney are fighting at the moment which is delaying the release of certain movies, so I'll have to wait a couple of weeks. However, I read that in spite of the good reviews, the movie has totally flopped at the (America) box office. I don't know why. from what little i read about that, i think some people accuse it of being too "woke" (like, the people that like to use that as a bad word) - i suppose they are bothered by a gay main character (whose being gay is not of importance to the story, he just happens to be gay, as other characters happen to be straight), and by the message of the movie concerning protecting the environment, even if that means denying oneself things that make life more comfortable ... and well, it is true that there are better disney movies, but as i said, imho it wasn't bad, either ...

Gilles Perret is famous in France for his excellent social documentaries, which almost nobody has ever seen. And that means that he is not famous at all to the general public. So he decided to try his hand at fiction with Reprise en main (Takeover). One of the foremen in a precision machine parts factory gets wind of yet another sale of the company with the new buyers who will terminate even more staff aven though the company is making money. So he gets together with some friends after learning from a fellow cliff climber (an investment banker in Geneva) what a farce buyouts and takeovers are. You only need a tiny bit of capital and all of the rest is loaned to you. Obviously, it isn't that simple, but this is fiction after all. And it makes you want to believe that they can succeed. Bad people get punished and you are at least left with hope for the future. even if it is not a main topic of a movie, i am always kind of interested in seeing how realistic or unrealistic they make climbing scenes - most of the time they confuse me and i try to figure out what it is they are showing ... like here, in the few pictures in the trailer, the guy seems to be on a rather large wall, and i can't see a rope or a belayer - did they show one (and i can't make it out here), or was he free soloing? and since free soloing is a quite extreme form of climbing (much more dangerous than regular free climbing), did that have any importance in the story?
