Isn't the Neretva River also the one that flows through Mostar? Scene of another famous blown up bridge.
Those pictures of water and greenery are really lovely.

Ah, thanks. I had been told the Chinese info by a woman from the area who was very upset about it. There is also Laguiole cheese, by the way.

If this were a movie, someone would pick up that badminton birdie woman and start batting her across a net. This said, I have always found Thom Browne's clothes absolutely awful, even when it is supposed to be fashion and not just fancy dress.

It looks as though some areas are saving money. They didn't bother putting broadloom on the whole floor in the French Creation village at the beginning. Good idea actually because it all ends up filthy and in landfill.
And Laguiole knives are Chinese now. The brand was bought by the Chinese at least 15 or 20 years ago so those made in the French town of Laguiole are no longer allowed to use the name.
I'm a party pooper, I know.

I can't face going through them again -- just looked at a few on the BBC when I checked the news headlines.

I just watched them all. I would certainly cull Germany, Croatia, Australia, Ireland (those bags on their heads!) and the UK for a start. The rest sort of blur into strobe lights, gruesomely long fingernails. Except for the Italian who is good looking.

Anyone who watches Youtube videos gets these "suggested" videos along the side. For some reason, today I saw one called "3 legit reasons for decluttering after the age of 50". Well, I'm not really a hoarder but the suggestions were really good. 1. Don't make your children have to deal with your stuff. 2. If you have to go into a care home, you won't be in control over what you can take with you 3. Life is easier if you don't have to look for things, clean stuff you don't use...
The videos are called "The Life Tidy".

I always envy brick walls in gardens -- such a nice background for plants.
Bixa, the yellow roses have bloomed and indeed look nice.

Articles in today's Guardian about republican ideas in both New Zealand and Australia. In neither place are plans for becoming a republic on the immediate agenda, but both prime ministers are in favour of their countries becoming independent republics. Visibly Charles doesn't have his mother's popularity although these republican thoughts have been around for a while. A quick google tells me that many Canadians also don't identify with having a British head of state.

When we last went to Rome in 2009, we stayed with friends, one of whom is Roman. He took us to see this area, which is so nice and really different from anywhere else in Rome.

I have only ever heard Canadians saying "yous" as a plural for you. And that was in a small-town Ontario restaurant. Then again, no reason for me to ever go to the prairies.

Exactly. And I bet you say herbs and not ‘erbs. Yes, I say herbs. But Canadians tend to be caught somewhere mid-Atlantic, with some British spelling and pronunciation and some American. But mostly American pronunciation, although never southern-sounding.

I just finished a mystery that takes place in the Landes, where I live, so I always enjoy books that mention places I know or have been to. And am starting a detective story by an Australian author, Dead Girl Sing by Tony Cavanaugh.
Also halfway through a book by a French writer called Manook which takes place in Mongolia. Also a police book but interesting for the completely unknown to me culture and the depressing descriptions of Ulaan Baator and post-Soviet Russia.

I have noticed that when some English speakers whose accents are more influenced by British English, like Australians, transliterate words in other languages into English, they often add an -r after a vowel where there isn't one.
Not being American, hence not benighted, on the rare occasions I say that word, I say "peecan", light stress on the second syllable.

Interesting. I looked on a map to see where it is and would have thought that being located in a place so close to three countries' borders would make you open to other languages. Visibly that's not the case here. No wonder wars over national feelings go on for years.

There was also an interesting opinion piece on why Charles should pay for his own coronation, given that he is so wealthy that taxpayers should not have to do so. Especially that no other monarchies have such costly (or even any) coronation ceremonies.

We went out for a walk and met a friend who was so pissed off after watching the first 20 minutes of that game that he went out for a walk. I guess he'll be upset when he gets home to discover that the French didn't do too badly afterwards, even if they lost.

I like the smell of leather too. One smell I liked as a kid but don't find often now is that of a certain kind of plastic. During my Canadian youth, women used to wear these strange plastic rainboots over their shoes, like these but transparent.

I was in Bayonne yesterday afternoon and most of today. It was warm -- at least 25 or 26, but clouded over some this afternoon so we may get some rain tomorrow. Still 23° outside at 9pm.

Thanks all. Yes, it's my garden. I posted those pics then left for Bayonne yesterday. It's only about 30 km south but further ahead in blooms. But they almost never get frost. I also realize I have too many purple flowers - at least at this time of year. A few more photos:
