Bixa, I decided to take advantage of the last opportunity to buy books in English using The Book Depository and took your advice: my copy of The Books of Jacob arrived today. It's massive!

I used the present tense because it takes us a few meals to get through the bottle so it's an ongoing situation.

We are drinkng a bottle of Saint-Chinian, a red (grenache/mourvedre/carignan) wine from the Languedoc area of France. I was given a couple of bottles on my recent trip to Toulouse. In the past years we had a lot of wine from some work I did for a friend, but that has pretty much run out now. We don't have a cellar in this house anyway so there is no point in stocking up.

On the "just in case" idea. When we first moved to Toulouse, we lived in an apartment building on the 5th floor. My youngest son was 2 and his brother and sister were in school but still young, aged 6 and 7. One day, just before going to pick them up at school, I went to the bakery to buy bread then stopped off at home to leave it. I was about to park the child just outside the door in this stroller while I went upstairs but at the last minute decided to take him with me.
The elevator got stuck between the 4th and 5th floors. Ringing the help button was of no use since the concierge was taking a bath, as I learned later. I could sort of pull open the doors but not get out. One of the other 5th floor tenants came grumbling up the stairs because the elevator was stuck. I called him and he went to get the concierge, who finally called a repairman. The little boy and I spent an hour in that elevator. Fortunately, the school was really close so the other kids came home by themselves.

I took a bunch of photos of the garden this afternoon, but for some reason it looks so much better in reality than on the photos. This is the only picture that is reasonably okay.

The worst is that this scum has no shame at all. Despite the published emails and messages that show what hypocrites they are, they keep on doing the same thing and will continue to do so.

I was surprised that Russia actually imported vodka. I thought it was one of the few things they produced, other than oil and gas.

My husband and one of my sons went there at about a 30 year gap. Both thought it was horrible and uninteresting. My husband actually bought a book of photos -- as one did in the old days -- and none of the pictures gave me the slightest interest in going there.

Their main argument was going to be all about free speech and how they can say anything they want while being protected by the First Amendment. Murdoch and the Fox bunch would probably have lied in court too.

I really enjoy Marina Hyde in the Guardian. "Back on the official channels, strong efforts are being made to get people excited about the approved royal menu for their subjects’ day. It feels somehow apt that the official dish selected by King Charles is a quiche, given quiches are often wet and almost always disappointing. Like some of Charles’s recent walkabouts, the dish has been regarded as a good use of leftover eggs."

The concept of beauty for eastern European and near Eastern brides is quite different from my own concept. Actually, there are a lot of really lovely women in Eastern/Central Europe. After the fall of the iron curtain, modelling agencies had a field day looking there for model material. And I was quite impressed by how attractive so many of the (younger) women in the various countries in Eastern and Central Europe are. I also had the impression that a lot of the men looked like thugs.

I kind of enjoy quiche once in a while. What's in this one besides crust and eggs? It seems to have spinach and some kind of beans inside.

The only controversial idea I found in one article was the suggestion of serving boiled potatoes with the quiche.

When I see people with masks, I feel they look rather strange since there are so few of them. I stopped wearing one as soon as they were no longer obligatory.

I fail to understand Russian strategy in this war. These are places they claim to want to keep but they are bombing them into complete rubble. The same with Mariupol and other cities.

Great pics Marks. The husband looked very happy, with shoulders slouched, and the wife so smiling. To me the groom looked like a mafioso. The bride suited him perfectly. Great pictures, Mark.

As always, I am interested to see photos of the Balkans -- one of the places I keep meaning to get to before too long. As Kerouac says, nice weather which makes for even more desire to go there. Rather surprised to see snow-capped mountains, but of course it gets cold there in winter.
The little church is lovely.
