Did you play concurrently with your true love of cricket?
I imagine I have seen similar fancy tricks in tv and movies, but was so into the soccer games shown in this particular show that I just kept thinking, how do they do that?

Thérèse desqueyroux. Aka Folcoche. Key character of the book Vipère au poing, largely autobiographical, that every student of my age had to read at school. Nice reading though. This intrigued me & I looked up the book. At what age did students have to read the book? If mid-school, 13, 14, 15, that is pretty impressive, considering the themes covered in the book.

Meriwether Lewis -- American explorer, soldier, politician, and public administrator, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He fit all that into a short lifespan, as he died at the age of 35, presumably by suicide, but perhaps was murdered instead.

I completely missed your October updates to this report, Whatagain, but am enjoying them now. Are the newest pictures because you are there now, which I'm assuming because of your weather remark?
The hiking pictures are gorgeous -- that clear, clear air and the beautiful long views are visual treats.

I am crushed that no one answered my question, since I cheerfully assumed at least one or two people here enjoyed that kind of technological magic & would have insight into how it worked.

Yes, saw that in my Breaking News email this morning. I've put a different photo by a passenger in the spoiler below. (photo is huge) It appears the plane was assembled by the pop-bead method. From the NYTimes article: "Within hours, the company said that it was grounding all 65 of its Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft until it could inspect each plane. ... The Association of Flight Attendants at Alaska Airlines said that the decompression was “explosive,” and that one attendant had sustained minor injuries. ... Ms. Le said no one was sitting in the window seat next to the missing fuselage, but that a teenage boy and his mother were sitting in the middle and aisle seats. ... The boy appeared to have lost his shirt, and his skin looked red and irritated, she added. ... The cause of the midair problem was unclear as of early Saturday. Keith Tonkin, the managing director of Aviation Projects, an aviation consulting company in Brisbane, Australia, said that an excessive difference in the air pressure inside versus outside the cabin could have caused the wall to break off. Passengers were probably able to breathe normally even when the plane was at its highest altitude, Mr. Tonkin added. The plane was new, having been certified in November, according to the F.A.A. registry of aircraft. It entered commercial service that month and has since logged 145 flights, according to Flightradar24, another flight tracking site." www.nytimes.com/2024/01/05/business/alaska-airlines-flight-portland-landing.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Lk0.urBy.BrQ1qecEn9sa&smid=url-shareA photo provided by a passenger showed a portion of the wall blown out on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 Max after it had safely landed.Credit...Elizabeth Le

It is sunny, though, and will get up to 75/23.8 later.

Kimby fell into the dreaded rhyming trap. Lugg, I just checked & you have to subscribe to get all of Spelling Bee. For free it lets you play up to the "Solid" level, then compliments you on how brilliant you are & suggests subscribing. Anyway, this link will give you a taste. You can click on any of the games listed below it to see which ones are free, or free to a point. For instance, I think you can play Tiles two or three times with no subscription & Mini Crossword is free. Even though I know that no anyporter would ever waste time with silly online games, I'll share another one I play. You'll see on the banner at the top that there are lots more options on this site: www.solitaireparadise.com/games_list/bookworm.html

Lucky, lucky, lucky! I would so love to see a fox. That guy is a beauty. I don't know if that is a brush pile or berry canes in the foreground, but they obviously make a place for a fox to feel secure.

Well, doo-doo! There is a book by Yiyun Li that I've had on my Kindle books wish list for months. On December 29 I bought the book at full price, partly to take advantage of a triple points offer and partly because I felt the price was never going to come down. Wouldn't you know it, today it's on sale for $1.99. Even though I'm sulking at the lost chance to save money, I am delighted to be able to urge you all to get to know this author if you don't already. My introduction to Yiyun Li was though a paperback edition of A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, a collection of short stories which astounded me with its excellence. The price is $1.99 in the US and in Canada, and on sale in the UK for £4.49.

I'm working on next year's list. It's going to be a long one. ~?~ Okay, all ~~ you know I would not burden you with questions unless it was for something important, so here goes: I have been watching Ted Lasso (read: addicted to) and find the game sequences riveting. What I want to know is, how do they do that? I'm not asking how actual athletes do their feats, but how do movies & tv give us those shots where it appears the actor/player is doing a certain thing? I get that some shots are easy to fake, but there have been some with players doing what seems to be the impossible -- back flips with the ball kicked by the heel, another flip with the ball hit by the forehead, etc. Both those shots showed the face of the actor/player. I know it has to be some kind of technological wizardry in the editing, but it's extremely real looking and impressive.
