Climate change is ravaging quite a bit of the European wine industry. Northern wines like Riesling should come out better.

They'll be growing Sangiovese in the Rhine and Reisling in Estonia before you know it.

The French have already bought up quite a bit of grape territory in England.

A Blast From The Past - Today is the birthday of a past Anyporter ( I say Past as in no word since 2010 ) but who knows if Alanseago is still with us at an age today of 83. Not many posts but this one to Kerouac interested me. I thought Whatagain might have a bottle of this in his well stocked cellar...
Quoate: "I agree with you absolutely Kerouac2. An old chateau bottled Bordeaux e.g. Petrus should be handled with care, a vin du table can be merrily sploshed around."

Lugg, what is a g&t ?
Incredible story here. A son of a friend took his bike to a party because he felt he would be plastered. He got plastered. Got back on his bike. Controlled by cops. Lost his driving license and a fine of 2500 euros. Wtf ? What signal do the police send ? Don't get plastered ? Or take your car and drive drunk it won't be more than driving a bike.

In France, you can lose points on your licence for breaking the law on a bike, but of course not everybody has a drivers licence, so I don't know exactly how it works. I presume that once they have established your identity, they also quickly know if you have a drivers licence or not even if you denied it -- that probably does not help your case. I don't know Belgian law, but I would suspect that to get a fine of 2500 euros, your friend's son was insulting and disrespectful when he was stopped by the police. People who immediately say something like "I'm sorry. I'm drunk and I'm an idiot" are rarely penalised to that extent.

In the US, you can be cited for DUI on a bicycle, but the cops are wise enough to never, ever enforce it. Harm reduction first principles make it a very bad decision because drunk cyclists are basically only a (mild) threat to themselves and you'd much rather have them wobbling home on their bicycles than getting into a lethal missile to drive.
<edit> In the US, if a cop were writing up an inebriated cyclist at 2:00 AM, they'd be unable to cite the 20 drunk drivers of two ton steel boxes that swerved past while they were doing the paperwork on the cyclist. And that's in nobody's best interest.

I met a friend* one day with a big plaster cast on his left arm. He explained that he'd gone to a party where he suspected he'd wind up over-imbibing, thus went on his bike. One the way home he cut through a parking lot with one of those low-hanging chains & went ass over teakettle. I commiserated and said, "Well, at least it's your left arm." He gave me a dirty look & said, "I'm left-handed."

That's the problem with liquor.....too much usually makes people aggressive and not thinking along the politest of manners to secure not being in trouble.

Whisky and diet cola for my early evening drink. Boring, I know. (Of course the diet cola cancels the calories of the whisky.)

Yeah if you get mouthy with a cop, they will always find something to charge or ticket you with. I don't blame them either.

That is why I will add plenty of ice to my glass of ginger ale, water it down a bit as I find it too sweet as well.
Hope that you enjoyed your special day yesterday Bixa! Happy Belated Birthday!

I'm having an almost classic Negroni. I didn't have an orange slice, so used a slice of lime plus a couple of drops of agave syrup. It is said that the Negroni is a "man's drink", but I don't know why. Yes, it's bitter from the Campari, but overall rather sweet. Just to make sure it doesn't put hair on my chest, I added an ounce of water to the classic recipe of ounce of gin, ounce of sweet vermouth, ounce of Campari. It sure is good!

That mixture sure sounds like something I would love to have on a South African sunset! I do have an orange slice but I don't have Negroni ( but tomorrow is another day!)

Raining here and it's getting dark earlier. Got a little wet on the walk with the dogs this evening. Came home & put together supper in my new Instant Pot, then made a lovely drink I christened the "Why Not". It's quite enjoyable.
"Why Not?"
Muddle a couple of sprigs of monarda in a shaker then toss in four ice cubes. Pour in 2 ounces of Raku, an half ounce of Dolin, a quarter ounce of Tanqueray Rangpur, & two drops + a dash of Angostura bitters. Don't shake, but jostle the shaker vigorously, then strain into a martini glass & think how good life sometimes is.
