baked rye bread today. it turned out strange - crumbling to pieces whenever i try to cut it ... still had some of it for dinner, with tomato butter my sister in law had given me, and vegan sucuk ... and for dessert, a slice (well, several crumbled pieces) of bread with honey.

Totally lazy today, so I had frozen fish fingers and frozen roasted potatoes. At least the wine wasn't frozen.

I think a lot of us drop in quality on Sunday evening. How true. All I could manage was to make a simple sandwich with tomato, fontina cheese and prosciutto and some rosemary crisps. Wasn't bad though.

could be - it was a ready-made mixture where i was just supposed to add yeast, so the amount of flour was set - but maybe the package of yeast they had in mind was smaller than the one i used - or maybe it was indeed the kneading ... might try the mixture again and vary that a bit ...

as for today's dinner, a's friend visited, and somehow when other kids visit i notice how our food at home is pretty limited (mainly due to no time for shopping - i only go to the organic food store, then, so we don't have meat, since that shop is vegetarian) ... so, we had tortillas, which a. eats with melted cheese, and i had mushrooms, some chickpeas in tomato sauce and melted cheese on it, but the friend had them plain and then said they taste boring. of the things we had, he chose peanut butter and vegan sucuk, and insisted putting both on the same tortilla. after two bites he claimed he was full (i thought it was a bit of a waste, especially that sucuk is expensive) ... i also had a can of gulash soup that someone once gave me - he liked that ...

I bought a jar of spaghetti sauce, vodka sauce. We have never had it so we thought we would give it a try. When I opened the jar it actually smelt like a Bloody Mary! I have let it simmer all afternoon and the smell has gone, hope it tastes okay. I added sausage meat balls, hamburger, sage, oregano and pepper.

~?~ Mich, your spaghetti supper sounds lovely. Tonight I had capellini with garlic butter and loads and loads and loads of fresh asparagus alongside, also bathed in the garlic butter. It was heaven.

Last night I roasted ( In my Airfyer of course) the first lamb loin roast from the half lamb I bought three weeks ago. It was terrific. on the side was fresh cabbage and broccoli, roasted butternut(from the airfryer), potatoes boiled in their jackets, and a really nice savoury gravy to go with the mint sauce. As two of us cannot eat an entire loin we will have it cold with salad tonight.

Thanks for giving me a Chefs hat Mick! I am really a plain cook who likes to follow ...not always exactly - different recipes. As for lamb - I paid 5 pds a kilo. That is a reasonable cost and most supermarkets can almost double that.

Mich, your spaghetti supper sounds lovely. It ended up tasting pretty good! I think the sage and all day simmering made the difference.

I needed to go to the store here to get a couple of things I was running low or out of (beer, garlic and Reggiano, only absolute necessities!) and was going to make a nice pasta for dinner but by the time the gas guy finished servicing and doing mandatory safety certification on the water heaters, I was too hungry and just whipped together two little sandwiches because I had bread and a perfect big cuore di bue tomato that weren't getting any younger and if I tarried and they'd have got a bit gone I'd end up feeding them to the pigs down the hill rather than myself. So more sandwiches for lunch tomorrow to finish both off and the pasta can be tomorrow's dinner. Whatever might be left of the tomato will wind up in the salsa and the bread will indeed be pig feed. Good bread just doesn't keep but the pigs won't mind. And after you've fed them a couple of times, they'll eagerly trot over to the fence to see what you've brought today for them. Almost makes me feel bad when the farmer next door feeds me a delicious piece of one of them! But not bad enough, I guess.
Friday evening Paola, Mario's wife is having me over and making a feast for me, her daughter, and her new son-in-law. The last time was epic and I described it here. Can't wait for the encore!

Fumobici, in a single post about having sandwich for supper, you seem to have summed up the highs and lows of human existance.
Thanks, Rikita! You wouldn't happen to know the name of that simple but incredibly delicious Turkish lentil soup, would you?

We are almost vegetarians since starting to plant vegetables seriously. I love meat and know too much of it gives you colon cancer. So tonight more vegetables with a pork banger - just to keep the meat police happy

Mrs Cactus was in M&S buying Xmas biscuits this morning and found a pack of large bone in chicken thighs reduced to 91p as this was their last day. I dusted them with 5 spice powder and roasted them with fat chips and served with a reheated tomato, onion and courgette sauce we had cooked up a month ago and put in the freezer.

I jump on reduced price chicken thighs in any shop at any opportunity. It is pretty much my favourite meat item.

I know that North African lentil soup is called chorba. It is one of the main things to eat for iftar (breaking the ramadan fast).

Who knew! I've been making Meatless Chorba for years - my gardener is a vegetarian and I make him various versions of this stew. Except we call it Rasta stew as he is a Rastafarian. I freeze it in portions and once reheated it goes with a side of several different starches - like bread, or rice, or lately Phutu which is a solid maize porridge similar to polenta.

Dinner can be so easy for the housewife or househusband who has to cook. In my young marriage everything was made from scratch and took hours. Tonight I am serving a very acceptable dinner - Of course I would say that haha! I had pre-breaded Vienna Schnitzels so lightly fried them in a mixture of oils - I like the fact it has olive oil, and other oils like grapeseed, avocado etc. Then whilst keeping warm on the Hotray in a dish, I cooked spaghetti in two stock cubes (Veg) and let the water almost evaporate before adding several tablespoons of Ivanka AJVAR "Preperation de legumes aux poivrous or Preparato vegetale ai peperoni....but no English until a clever clogs stuck a label on the jar "Äjvar Mild red pepper relish".
The sauce for the schnitzels was two pouches of prepared cheese and mushroom sauce to which I added three sliced zucchini, half a dozen chopped spring onions together with garlic and fresh Italian parsley. That will go over the schnitzels. Then I thought.....Mmmmm, this needs some warm sour dough panini's. So I started kneading the dough...Just kidding. I popped the ""ready mades into a warm Airfryer!!
