Well, you must have been quite the little surprise, Mick. I didn't know you were a twin, Spaceneedle. Identical?

Well, you must have been quite the little surprise, Mick. I didn't know you were a twin, Spaceneedle. Identical? Hardly. Apparently I was deliberate therapy as my mother had depression after the war. My sister hated me. I had ruined her cosy life.

Wow. The "good old days" and their ways of dealing with emotional issues. I hope it worked, anyway.
My baby sister is eleven years younger than I. I never hated her, just saw no point to her or the other little kids. My parents had one perfectly fine girl (me) and one perfectly fine boy (my brother who is very close in age to me). There was really no reason for them to keep going.

Unfortunately not. She suffered depression most of her post war life, was committed twice and attempted suicide once and threatened it constantly.
Sorry. Not very cheerful. That's enough.

I've already mentioned my slightly older and much larger and stronger brother who was terribly violent. As with others, parents back then either didn't care or didn't know what to do about such dynamics. My father, a chain smoker of a certain age, was ill for most of my childhood, and they thought I should "manage" my violent and destructive brother.
Sadly, he died some time ago while cycling (think it was last autumn but would have to check) hit by a car. As usual, the driver wasn't charged, though it doesn't seem that brother was doing anything wrong. No, I'm not at all happy about that, as it was extremely unjust, but I do confess that it was something of a relief as I've always been terrified that he'd locate me in my city and beat the shit out of me.
I am NOT saying this to cry about my childhood. Only to make clear that such crap and its acceptance were very widespread not many decades ago.

Back a few years it was difficult to get a divorce and couples were locked into toxic marriages. The all wise family doctor would sometimes suggest that they have a baby to hold the marriage together. AS IF!

I have a sister a year older than me. We are very different but get along pretty well, living in different countries as we do.
Couples were not necessarily "locked into" toxic marriages. My parents separated when I was 12, but I admit it was difficult for both my parents and rather unusual at the time. But I also remember talking to an old aunt of my mother's in Poland. Her husband used to get drunk and beat her, until the older son turned 16 and felt big enough to threaten his father. But years after the father's death, when I met her, she told me that as a good Catholic she felt guilty for being relieved when her husband died.

“Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?”
Abraham Lincoln was shot & mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth during a performance of My American Cousin at Ford’s Theater in Washington DC on April 14, 1865. Gone 155 years!

Also, on this date in 1912, the Titanic had a close encounter with an iceberg. It did not end well...

Today is the 10 year anniversary of the Bad People Deep Water Horizon oil tanker explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.
Needless to say, the long term effects of this disaster to the environment are still in evidence.

Fossil fuels will be banned in most of Western Europe within the next 10-15 years, at least for private vehicles. Naturally, I expect them to push their deadlines back as the dates approach, but I hope that I am wrong.
