April in the UK is forecast to be the frostiest for 60 years.
And because of the cold nights we are having a constant problem of ants in the kitchen.

It has been snowing all day in Flagstaff, AZ. Fortunately, here in north Florida, it’s been dry, sunny, and not too hot. Perfect weather.

Does snow work as well as Lysol for killing coronavirua?

Similar to Florida, coronavirus does not exist in the great state of Arizona.

Does snow work as well as Lysol for killing coronavirua? Better man. That's why you never saw Covid spread at ski resorts.

April in the UK is forecast to be the frostiest for 60 years. And because of the cold nights we are having a constant problem of ants in the kitchen. Mick, our son had a problem with ants in his kitchen recently and claimed that putting some pieces of lemon on their paths got rid of them. He admitted that often these "ecological" methods don't work very well but in this case they did.

Thanks bjd. The problem is that they are very tiny and we can't find where they are getting in.

We have a big problem with ants in the summer in Spain in the kitchen. The kitchen is all tiles and I saw one time they were entering where the sink drain went through the wall. Then it was the water pipes, then gaps in the grout of the tiles by the window, around the window frame, the kitchen door to outside and even though we have a solid concrete floor with tiles on top, they were coming in again where there had developed gaps in the grout. Pain in the arse it is in the summer and the slightest food left out, crumbs etc attracted them. Even getting into the bread bin which we had to keep changing to find a well sealing one. All the counter tops have to be well cleaned and if the sink sponge is not clean, in a morning they are all over that as well, they seem to come out of the sink overflow. We can't leave any packets open and have to seal everything away in plastic containers.

Gosh Mark I think you nearly have something for a movie script! Your ants are certainly far far worse than ours. Those teeny weeny little critters come up through the tiniest of holes in concrete/bricks/or paving. All we do is put down a small plastic disk-like Ant Trap. They go in and eat the poison and take it to the queen - then she either dies or her eggs are sterile, not sure which. There is an outdoor one and an indoor one. I have no idea why one must be different from the other.

Mrs Cactus is clearing out and disinfecting all the cupboards this morning in a bid to stop them. We will use ant powder where we can. It’s just because of the cold weather. She found them in a box of cornflakes yesterday.
Many years ago we were in a hotel in Benidorm on the 7th floor and still had ants in the waste basket.

I used to have ant poison that I bought at garden centres. It too attracted the ants, which then took it to the nest. But you can't buy it any longer because it contained arsenic. Only used it outside of course.

Coincidentally we have an infestation of teeny-tiny ants in our block, and the management have called in the exterminators - I'm expecting them tomorrow morning. I read somewhere that cleaning with lemons or vinegar would put them off their runs, but they'd just find new ways to and from their nests. In our case, we'd really need the kind of stuff that they take back to the nest, because who knows where it might be? I did look out for stuff like that, but I'm not sure the Ant Trap discs do that - I tried them for a while but I never saw any of them go near it. Patrick - You have to almost put the disc right in front of them - in their pathway.

I love it there for a day or two. As well with a couple of places near Malaga. Excellent entertainment, and I mean the enjoyment I get out of watching Brits on holiday. The availability of proper food is good too.

Patrick - You have to almost put the disc right in front of them - in their pathway. Ah, that would be the problem, I couldn't see a pathway, they just looked like single scouts prospecting. But I could put out a biscuit or something as bait, and see whether that makes things clearer.

I just realised that I have not seen ants in years, except at the zoo. (I love the fact that the zoo displays ants.)
After a week of sunny weather, it is finally raining a bit. Not very convincingly for the moment.

Hope the exterminators' work did the job. Here is some information for the future, if you need to resort to poisons again. One of the suggestions is a brand name, but the active ingredient is considerately given, so you could obtain it. www.pestproducts.com/pissant.htm

Woke WAY too early, and after tossing and turning for too long, gave up and came out to sit on the screen porch and catch up with Any Port news. It began raining a while ago but is still warm enough to stay on the porch listening to the raindrops, and the surf pounding in the distance.

Hope the exterminators' work did the job. Well, they came and stuck up a number of bait stations (transparent, so one can see if it's being taken). So far, no sign of any activity - maybe whatever they've done in my neighbours' flats has done the trick. But they'll be back in a month to check. Apparently they're pharaoh ants and the bait delivers a contraceptive dose to the queen ant (unless I misunderstood).
