Saddle up cowpokes! We're headin' south (from my place anyway) to Morris Manitoba for the annual Manitoba Stampede and Exhibition - a down home style country fair with an Agricultural Show, Midway, Entertainment and the main event, a professional rodeo!!! Once we git our tickets we head through the midway with it's rides, food concessions and shopping outlets... New saddle anyone? And then we take our seats in the grandstand to watch the cowboys in action... Oh! Sorry, that's not a cowboy. Neither is he, but he IS a real life rodeo clown with his dogs and his lovely bride (the one on the far left). Now for some real cowboys and some crazy antics on horses and other critters! First up - Saddle Bronc Ridin' - hang onto your hats folks! TBC...

Ohhhhhhhh ~~ Imec! This is absolutely wonderful. As an American, I love the whole rodeo/country fair scene and this view of pure Canadiana makes me kinda homesick.
Not only does the event look like so much fun, it's absolutely charming. The homemade food signs! The doggies! Can't wait to see more.
And hey -- that potato chip photo is particularly great.

Fantastic! Of course I am talking about the art with the hamburgers that all have pineapple in them.

I think it would be more "Canadian" (aka multicultural) if the cowboys were wearing sparkly matador clothing for the steer wrestling.

Seriously, those are great action shots with the riding of irate animals, as good as any that I have seen.

Your pictures are really good, Imec.
I hadn't realized there were cowpersons in Canada.

Great photos, Imec, especially since they are all 'mid-action'! Mine would be only a blur. I love the dapple grey horse.

In terms of the size of the event, how does this compare to the Calgary Stampede?

Doesn't look "quaint" to me. Looks like you can get killed!
Well, not you, but the people straddling those beasts...

geeeeez-looweeez, Imec! You really captured the thrills and near-disasters of the rodeo. I can't believe some of those pictures. There is such an art to getting action shots that are also good photographs in terms of composition, etc.. Whew, you could write a book on it!
I also can't believe you kept your cool in watching some of these thrills and spills enough to keep clicking away.
Just wonderful!

Yes,the action you captured is unbelievable (maybe you could impart to us some hints on how you achieved this?) I have to laugh when I think of all the steaks you would have to carve up Imec, with reference to the ribbing you've received in the food threads... ;D about said topic. I have some fond memories of going to the rodeo as a child, positively loved it. The last rodeo I went to was in the 1980's here in Louisiana,it's held annually at a federal penitentiary, and the inmates on death row,get to ride. Needless to say, they really get pretty brazen, careless and who wouldn't,faced with knowing you're going to die, going out in a blaze of glory!!?? An excellent thread, thanks.

Thanks people! More thrills (and costumes) yet to come!
btw, I didn't do anything particularly clever to get these images. I set the lens to it's longest focal length (200mm), and set the mode to "Sport" which ensures a fast shutter speed is used. I did crop most of these images which serves to "blow the images up" somewhat as I wasn't all that close to the action.

Imec, I have really enjoyed this thread. As noted, your photos are really wonderful. Rodeo is quite a big event here, as one might expect, and I have been to a few events over the years. My older daughter's best friend was a serious rodeo rider (along with her brother, sister and parents) from the time she was old enough to get on a horse. In fact, her sister won a rodeo scholarship to a Texas university - even though she was studying business.

Great pics, Imec.
I've been to just one rodeo in my life and that was as a child.
I'd love to experience one again.

No talent? No matter! Just set your arse or your belly onto a small piece of plastic and someone will tow you around the dirt track at breakneck speed - all's ya gotta do hang on for your life...

That was a real rip roaring action packed report. Thanks, imec.
Those miniature chuck wagons look a little stupid, though.
