Yes, you have to keep the knees moving but without putting stress on them. Walking or cycling = good. Running or jogging = bad.

Actually, I recently read that runners have fewer knee problems than expected, and certainly fewer than people who do nothing. That's not to say that running for miles on concrete is good for you, but in general, running is fine.
Personally, when I was still running, I never had pain in my knees, but I did have pain cycling. Go figure.

Probably one of the reasons walking might be the best exercise is that people are more likely to do it. Walking requires no special equipment, it's something humans routinely do to get from one place to another, and it's far less likely to loom as a chore to be avoided.
My mother's husband took a brisk walk at least once a day around the lake behind their house. My mother, who is suffering mobility issues, told me yesterday that Bill always suggested she accompany him, but she always preferred to stay in the house. Now she says she regrets every one of those missed walks.

I think that swimming is one of the best exercises....
But yes any mobility is good for us and sitting on our areses is not.
