Her conversion to Islam was not very popular either in our part of the world.

Sadly not. Cotton Eye Joe lives on in football stadiums across America; Cha Cha Slide will likely be videoed at weddings forever.

We live on different planets. Never heard of him like most of those guys on this thread. Yurop is far away…

Never heard of him either, but "Sugarman" Sixto Diaz Rodriguez died today at 81. He never knew he was popular in South Africa and elsewhere until his daughter saw it on the internet. There was a documentary about him in 2012.

I've never heard of a lot of these people either but in many cases I know that it is because I never paid attention to their name, the name of their group or the name of their songs but I've probably heard some of their music over the years. It's interesting that ignorant people like me can appreciate (or dislike) all sorts of art forms like paintings or music often without any idea who created them. I think that all of us lock in the names of certain people (usually our personal favourites) and just let all of the others drift through our minds without sticking.

I just came here to post about Robbie Robertson but see I was beaten to it. The Band was really famous in Canada/US in the late 60s and the 70s.

All of the French language news (with TV5 Monde, I can see the French news, the Swiss news, the Belgian news and the Québec news) concentrated on Sixto Rodriguez and his late fame in South Africa and Malik Bendjelloul's documentary about him Searching for Sugar Man.

Turning the steering wheel away from Anglo-American music for just a moment, Toto Cutugno was a huge star in Italy and many of his songs were adapted throughout Europe. He also won the Eurovision song contest in 1990. But the song for which he will be remembered throughout Europe was L'Italiano in 1983. He died at age 80 of prostate cancer, which he had since 2007. I find it amazing that the official video was filmed in Paris at the Bistro Romain restaurant on the Champs Elysées (long gone).

The news of Jimmy Buffett’s death seems to have rocked the world of so many people, both musicians and listeners. So many of my baby boomer friends and relatives are shaken by his untimely departure. Me too. I loved so many of his songs. I hope you can open this link. apple.news/A4xiKUc9FS32Ynf5Jh5lMpw

It seems to have rocked only the English speaking world, though. It's interesting that certain country singers never go to worldwide fame, while people like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson or Dolly Parton are famous everywhere. Not that we really listen to them -- they are just famous.

Them Pascagoula boys are sharp ~ www.forbes.com/sites/brianbushard/2023/09/02/jimmy-buffett-dead-at-76-turned-margaritaville-into-a-billion-dollar-fortune/?sh=723a3d0c1d4cI'd say his music was a type of folk that struck a chord we didn't know we wanted until we heard it. As far as appealing mostly to the English speaking world, that's entirely logical for songs that are known as much for their great lyrics * as for the mood they capture. So many of my baby boomer friends and relatives are shaken by his untimely departure. Me too. I loved so many of his songs. Too true, and at his death that was acknowledged by both the generation before me and the one after. My mother said she immediately thought of me & my brother Jig when she heard the news, as she associated Buffet's music with our generation. And my son wrote on facebook: Man, I grew up really not liking Jimmy Buffet.....when I was on the swim team in high school this dude Coy Lebeau used to play his songs endlessly and I just couldn't stand it. Years later, a 19 year old me was working as a young dumb stagehand on one of the Jazz Fest stages for Little Feat and this little short guy walked up to me and said "hello" and I said hello back. Then he said, "You don't know who I am, do you?" and I answered no....then he said, " I'm Jimmy Buffet, nice to meet you." I think I said, "Cool, nice to meet you..." That's pretty much my only Jimmy Buffet story.....Godspeed and rest in peace good sir....even though I didn't know who you were, you are obviously someone to a lot of people and you made a lot of people happy with your music. May your music, legacy and memory live on in joy and positivity forever.*This song gets me every time ~

And yet in his entire career he only had one song in the top ten. That just means he didn't appeal to the lowest common denominator. A good thing.
