In Nairobi my father would walk past a grocery shop on his way to school. There was a young lad living there, ten years or so younger than my father, who would walk with him depending on when he left. The place where the shop was, was called Whittaker's corner. Roger Whittaker has died and he wasn't really well known apart from in the UK, Germany and here and there in Europe. He always had nice, gentle songs, the saddest probably being The Last Farewell. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Whittaker

Yes, seemed a lovely guy. My son is a part time DJ and has sampled some of his songs for his set.

One of those songs that made everybody dance, although I find some of those video excerpts at the end rather strange.

Karl Tremblay, singer of the Quebec group Les Cowboys Fringants has died of cancer age 47. Most of you have never heard of them but they are extremely popular in Quebec and I have heard them play here in southwestern France.

Every now and again the radio here plays something by La Bottine Souriante.

Striking?
Cowboys Fringants is rather quaint and Bottine Souriante is just plain weird.
I know this is unkind, but the music of Les Cowboys Fringants seems reason enough for Canada to let Quebec secede.
Here is good, authentic Frenchy cowboy music & you don't have to dress like Daisy Mae to dance to it ~

Then again, we're only talking about less than 1% of the listening public.

And I am clearly not inside that 1%. I would be outside drinking my beer and waiting for decent music to be played !
(But glad others have different tastes).

I prefer the Cowboys Fringants to that zydeco music by far. And I was surprised to see on Quebec news what a big deal this singer's death is. Lots of commentary on their political, social influence over the past 30 years.

As whatagain said, it is a blessing that people have different tastes. Here is good, authentic Frenchy cowboy music Thank god there is no such thing as French cowboy music. I will assume that bixa was thinking of cowboy music in French (probably Québec), which is not at all the same thing. The only example from France that I could come up with through Google was Joe Dassin, who made recordings of American country classics translated into French. It should be noted that he was born in NYC and lived in the US until his father director Jules Dassin was blacklisted.

That's a pleasant rendition of a song that's very near and dear to T and I.
In 1972, long before we met T was returning home to NOLA after being holed up on a tiny island off the coast of Alaska where he was dodging the draft from that useless war in Vietnam. (A story I have many times thought of chronicling on here at some point)
President Gerald Ford had just issued clemency for all those in hiding in various places (mostly Canada).
He was on a train in Oregon when he heard Arlo Guthrie's classic song.
Of course, he welled up with tears upon hearing it.
When he told me the story I have since taken pause whenever I hear it,
Thanks for posting this Kerouac and my apologies for my segueing into this story.

casimira, that's a touching story of T coming home. I think City of New Orleans is one of the great American songs.
Years ago I heard it sung in French on a French radio station. I recognized the tune but had no idea who the singer was. I was thinking maybe a French Canadian and googled for a few weeks before giving up.
Now, out of the blue, I learn that it's good old Joe Dassin. (Aux Champs Elysees is one of my dishwashing songs.)
The things you learn on Anyport!

I listened to him a lot when younger. Couldn't go for the black dyed hair and goatee and amber lensed glasses as he was last off. Looked like a wimpy Steven Segal. Didn't he have a controversy quite a few years ago with being accused of something with young girls or kids? Was that him of am I mistaking him for someone else.....

The report now says there was an “incident” and police and paramedics were called but he was found dead. Death not suspicious but unexplained.

So long, Steve Lawrence. He and wife Eydie Gormé were popular with my parents generation. But my very first week of college, in 1972, they played on campus. I remember thinking what an odd choice that was. I did not go. I was more into Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, and Chicago…. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_LawrenceI guess this could also have been posted with the dead movie stars, too.

Eric Carmen, lead singer for Raspberries, has died in his sleep at 74. Perhaps best known for Hungry Eyes which was featured in Dirty Dancing.
He also sang All By Myself, and Almost Paradise. All very familiar songs though I never heard his name before today.

Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel has left the stage. Biggest hit Make Me Smile which has apparently been covered by some 120 artists. I met him once at cricket.
