My niece took 2 of my sisters and a cousin out for 'afternoon tea' today (at lunchtime). Very elegant finger food on tiered platters. Thin sandwiches with sausage rolls and crisps on the bottom tier. Scones with a dish of cream and a dish of jam on the middle tier and bite sized mini cakes with chocolate dipped strawberries on the top tier. I had coffee because I don't drink tea... It was all very civilised and tasted even better because I wasn't paying

Couldn't find a breakfast thread in ~10 seconds of backbreaking research so here we are.
Friday I was invited to have breakfast with Mario, my farmer neighbor and six of his redneckissimi fieldhands, plus his son-in-law. The repast was served in the necessary shade an oak tree, seating arrangements were the ever-popular find a nice place to sit in the dirt. The preparation of the two-course degustazione took place in two enormous cast iron frying pans, each perched on rocks over oak fueled open fires. The first course were fries from the field just below us served in trumpets/cones rolled up from paper towels 'alla olandese' (Dutch-style). Soon after, the next course was offered- Wienerschnitzel on tuscan bread slices, which are called "patate rosse" in the local rural dialect. That means "red potatoes" and I was assured this wasn't just a wind-up at my expense.
The real highlight was being served homemade red wine in a paper cup and a wasp flying into and trying to drown itself in my wine unnoticed by me. You can, no doubt see where this is headed. I spit the wasp out along with a mouthful of wine to wide amusement. Even my own, after a minute, to process what just happened.
Next, in a half-hour, I'm invited for an actual lunch with tablecloths, real wine glasses and everything at Mario's house in town and prepared by his wife. She's a genius cook, so this should be nice. Report may be forthcoming.

Because of the extreme heat we’ve been having our main meal about 12.30 as the thought of cooking in the evening heat is too much.
Today we had pasta with pesto to which I added ham cut into small pieces and some grated Cheddar cheese. I also cooked up some courgettes and mushroom with Worcester sauce, salt and pepper and a few chilli flakes and added that as well.
It was very tasty and just right for the weather.

I just had some slices of ham with pickles for lunch. Dinner will also be cold.

I'll probably have something similar for tea maybe with some cheese.

Because of the extreme heat we’ve been having our main meal about 12.30 ..... You must have a Northern influence from somewhere.

2 rashers of fried bacon with 2 fried home grown tomatoes. Salt, pepper and a little Worcester sauce. The flavour was to die for....

Yesterday we took advantage of the cooler, drier, sunny, weather that came our way this week to have lunch in the French Quarter as we had some business to attend to with one of our attorneys.
We went to a place we had gone to last year upon the recommendation of a friend.
For starters I had steamed mussels in an incredible garlic laden white wine broth. T. had a melon wrapped with prosciutto salad. (I generally avoid ordering mussels unless they are from nearby waters).
The entrees we chose were, me, a veal with porcino mushrooms in a white wine sauce reminiscent of veal piccata accompanied by some linguini in the same sauce and an addition of plum tomatoes. T. had a shrimp scampi dish with a pesto laced linguini.
Both were excellent.
No dessert as we were both sated and couldn't have managed another bite of anything.

Went out for a walk and called for lunch yesterday. Bit of a trek uphill but ended up with a nice view on a sunny day - This was part of the lunch. Shopska salad - officially "tomatoes, cucumbers, onion/scallions, raw or roasted peppers, sirene (white brine cheese), and parsley." but usually just tomato, cucumber and cheese. Lešo koljenica - lower leg or knee of beef. Uštipci - fried dough balls with sour cream and cheese - There was also a soup, Begova čorba, which I consumed before the other stuff came - "....a thick soup made of chicken and okra with the addition of vegetables and herbs."

I could eat that although the fried dough balls appeal to me the least.

I think in the cuisine of a lot of countries there's some variation on fried dough. Churros comes to mind for one. They were shared between three of us with a couple left over.

There was also a soup, Begova čorba, which I consumed before the other stuff came - "....a thick soup made of chicken and okra with the addition of vegetables and herbs." You had gumbo! The food looks wonderful. The fried dough looks puffy rather than stodgy. Either the plain or the fancy version of the salad would be delicious. Is the bread as good as it looks? You must be back in Sarajevo.

North African "chorba" is a thick soup of mostly lentils. Generally served as an opening Ramadan course after the dates.

This was the food menu. Left side, Bosnian, right side English. Divide the prices by two to get Euros.

Bixa, I've no idea what gumbo is, though I've heard of it. The bread is always very tasty. In fact too much so. And yes the dough balls weren't so heavy at all. The bread is called somun bread and is sort of Balkan pita(ish) bread. Mainly used with ćevapi/ćevapčići - minced meat sausages. Extremely popular here and the national dish(?) I am in Sarajevo for now but have only been here a week or so and will be leaving again in just over a week to go again to Croatia and Slovenia for family reasons, then via Austria back to Germany for vehicle reasons - need to get the official mechanical test done - then back to Sarajevo for about three weeks, then off to Spain.
K2, as far as I know, chorba/čorba and variations of that word just mean soup or stew. This one is called Bey's soup from the Ottoman times, Bey being the Ruler. Probably something like that is also eaten here during Ramadan.

Mark, this is why your description of the soup reminded me of gumbo: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/post/21942/thread (reply #15). I memorized the word çorba when I was in Istanbul because it was on every menu and indicated a creamy lentil soup that I just loved. It's great to see the pictures & descriptions of the food in Sarajevo, something about which I would have been clueless otherwise.

I see what gumbo is now. For some reason I thought it contained fish. No idea why I did. Sarajevo has a plethora of restaurants and we find new ones every day. The downside is most are meat orientated and very few, and I mean very few, just less than a handful, don't allow smoking inside.

Gumbo can contain fish. It's one of those dishes that can be bastardised any way you want.
What I do not accept is not using okra in the dish, and this is more and more common. The whole reason that it is called gumbo is because of the okra, based on the Angolan Bantu word for okra -- "gombo" -- which is also the French word for okra.

I love that the grilled veg plate is cheaper if you order it in Bosnian.

Didn't see that, well spotted. It's probably cheaper because Bosnians don't order that anyway, only foreigners.

Yesterday we went to lunch to celebrate our (37th) anniversary. The restaurant is well known to many of our friends, but we had never been there before. www.bing.com/search?q=peche+restaurant+new+orleans&cvid=b5ca796daff54795bf21b4343e779b4b&aqs=edge.0.69i59j69i57j0l7.3755j0j1&pglt=299&FORM=ANNTA1&PC=LCTSWe both had the seafood gumbo and I have to say that while it was good it didn't come close to T.'s by a long stretch. Aside from lacking in taste it wasn't hot enough temperature wise and I came very close to sending it back. Our entrees were excellent. I had seared tuna accompanied by a butternut squash "hash" and Brabant potatoes. T. had grilled shrimp accompanied by roasted Brussel sprouts and Brabant potatoes. Dessert was apple strudel topped with vanilla ice cream.

Sounds like a great lunch and an excellent occasion, particularly compared to my leftover smoked sausage and mashed potatoes, which actually was not too shabby.

I was forced to go to the market to buy chicken soup for lunch. I was starving but because I'd just deep-cleaned the floors I begrudged myself the use of the kitchen in case of messing it up.
