SASOLBURG : On 2 June 1980, Sasolburg was attacked by Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the African National Congress's (ANC) military wing. They bombed two strategically important SASOL (oil-from-coal) plants and an oil refinery. This event was depicted in the 2006 film Catch a Fire.
Kader Asmal, founder of the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement, claimed in his memoirs, Politics in my Blood, that the ANC had recruited volunteers from the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) to do reconnaissance on the refinery.

Whatagain - Could it be here? Moeras van Jette-Ganshoren Yes indeed. Which explains why i know it so bad. Just opposite home and the place of HUDERF, hôpital universitaire des enfants reine Fabiola - a place i went too often to, best forgotten. Ganshoren and Jette are adjacent. I discovered Hore means Swamps in flemish, as moeras does... So probably a muddy place where the geese used to go, now covered by buildings.

I don't know when you were there - I was there in the 1985's and hated it. The stench of the drains running in the middle of the street right next to a cart filled with food on sale almost made me puke. The saving grace was heading out to Phi-Phi island. And returning to Singapore helped a lot. I did however go on a tourist trap tour to buy silk fabric. I never ever used it. My best find was the rambutans.

I went twice -- once alone and once with my parents. Both trips were perfect. We were here on Pansea beach: www.thesurinphuket.com/ Back then, the 3 of us had a bungalow for something like US$40 a night, but the Thai baht was greatly devalued while we were there so we only paid US$30 a night half board, including grilled lobster, unlimited prawns and all of the rest of the incredible buffets. Thank god lunch was not included -- even though we took the free shuttle into the city twice and could not resist the cashew chicken. It was called the Pansea back then and was a bit less luxurious. They have rebuilt since the tsunami.

Baphuon. Temple in Cambodia byilt in the XI century. Forgotten, rediscovered, partly rebuilt, dismantled for consolidation, left abandined and finally co solidated and rebuilt. I should read a full book about it, sounds fascinating.

Attenborough - a village in Nottinghamshire. Known for a local nature reserve made from converting old gravel pits. Also - "In the graveyard of St Mary's Church, there is a memorial to the 134 people killed on 1 July 1918 in an explosion in the shell factory in nearby Chilwell. This death toll remains the largest number of deaths caused by a single explosion in mainland Britain."

Stanley Is a seaside village with a laid-back vibe, popular for day trips. Casual eateries and cafes line the promenade, on Stanley Bay. Nearby, Murray House is a restored 19th-century former barracks overlooking the water, with restaurants serving global fare. Vendors selling clothes, ornaments and souvenirs line the winding lanes of Stanley Market.
I'm glad to say I have actually been there! And if I remember correctly we ate at the JUMBO Chinese floating restaurant after shopping, then more shopping, followed by a little more shopping. I never wore half the stuff....
