Not good. You should try a good dose of dysentery if you need a good clear out. I had it twice during my time in the Muddle East, the first dose was really severe. After a few days purging absolutely everything from my bowels, the out put changed to mixture of blood and water and I lost a lot of weight. Lovely days, I don't think.

We are no longer used to intestinal distress. Just about all of our food is safe, and the covid masking and hand sanitizer has proved that so many diseases are really transmitted by sneezing, coughing, spitting, etc and touching dirty things.
The specialists have long known that another problem is people who keep things TOO clean, particularly kitchens and bathrooms. Most of us stay healthy in our own germs because we're used to them. It's the germs of others that attack us.

Mick, I hope it is a 24 hour kind of situation versus the type Mossie went through!

That's awful, Mick. I see your post is from five hours ago. Sure hope you're feeling better by now.
I had a thing the other day. I hadn't felt bad all day, but not 100% good, either. There was a very slight burning in my stomach all day long, but something I could mostly ignore. I ate supper that night & went about my business. At the point I was closing up the house & getting ready to go to bed, my stomach started feeling like the scene in Alien, as it seemed to be swelling alarmingly. This was accompanied by some nausea & then suddenly it was a mad dash to the john to upchuck everything down to the soles of my feet.
Barfing certainly made me feel better, but most of next day I felt wimpy & achy, along with a good dose of covid paranoia. By that evening I was fine again, thank goodness.
I guess no one needed to read that boring saga, but I hope that your thing is only a 24-hour or less bout too, Mick.
Dramatic picture of dysentery, Mossie! It's no joke, as people can die of it from the dehydration alone. My mother was always warning about things which could cause dysentery. Because of that, I get rid of any cracked dishes on the theory they can harbor germs and am a fiend about rinsing the dishes in running water after washing.

am a fiend about rinsing the dishes in running water after washing. Does this mean that there are people who don't rinse their dishes after washing them?, (Of course I only mean people who possess running water.)

Well, they always say to eat pasta or rice in such circumstances.

My last big gastro lasted one full week, with antibiotics. I went 2 after being from Egypt to Corsica in a Club Med. Buffets full of food of everything. Me : 'please a hamburger well done with carrots and rice' . 'Wine,no thanks, just water'.

Oh shoot, Whatagain! Hope you get over it quickly.
Glad the pasta calmed your stomach, Mick. Did you by any chance do a covid test? My son's bout of covid, which was probably omicron, was characterized by extreme shivering.

It might just be psychological because my Chinese colleague was horrified when she learned that we all said to eat rice to stop diarrhea. "No! That's what you're supposed to eat if you're constipated!"

I thought you might (or might not ) like an update.
I have gastro enteritis which is going to last at least a week and I’ve barely set a foot outside the door since Saturday. Had to cancel everything until next week.
If you have a shortage of toilet paper in your store it’s my fault.
I am sick of tea, water and plain pasta. Diarolyte is my new friend.
I have the cleanest hands ever.
I didn’t like the shivering on the first 2 days. I would get cold and start and it would go on for 2 hours.
I am rarely ill and this is no fun,

Tough time Mick. Try boiled/mashed potatoes and/or plain toast for a change.

Thanks Mark.
I did dry toast but promptly bought it all back up. Today has been better and I had toast and honey and tonight Mrs Cactus did me a small bowl of stewed chicken and rice. Mrs C used a couple of Oxo cubes in the cooking juice and it was very tasty. Just what I needed.
Thanks htmb too.

The last time my intestinal flora was wiped out (by other medicines, but I don't recall what the original problem was), my doctor told me to take Carbolevure®, which is a mixture of carbon powder and yeast, and it worked wonders. I don't know about the carbon, but the yeast allowed my intestines to agregate what was in them back into solid things rather than diarrhea and it felt like a miracle.

I did dry toast but promptly bought it all back up. In the early stages when it is at its worst I'm surprised if you could keep any food down. I know I couldn't when I've had similar things. Worst was giardia.

Other things you could try are Grated apple...let it stand for a bit until the apple shreds are brown then eat. The oxidization process promotes faster healing. Mashed banana...soft mashed banana is high in Pectin which soothes the inflamed lining of the bowel Cola drinks...Can have water added, and flat or fizzy. The caffeine may give a "lift" which is good Barley Water...Boil half a cup of barley in 3 cups of water until barley is soft, and water cloudy.Strain away the liquid, add some lemon juice (Then go and get some cola, tastes better) Vegemite, Marmite...can be made into a broth... one teaspoon in a big mug of boiling water. Good when you are sick of sweet stuff and Vegemite can help stabilise body chemistry.

When I got so sick the 2nd time I was in London, I had a real flash of hatred for the Brits. All I wanted in the world were some saltine crackers, do I dragged myself into a supermarket to get some. That's when I discovered that Those People have peculiar, impenetrable names for the world's simplest food -- terms like "water biscuit". What the ding-dong?!

I’m pretty much over it now but it seems to have upset my body temperature regulator and I’m feeling the cold much more than usual.
Dropped half a stone.
