Even though it's been open since 1845, I had never been to Polidor before, only seen it when passing through the neighbourhood. it always seemed to me like it could be pricey with all of its old fashioned charm. But it is not really expensive at all. I went with a friend, and we both had the lunch menu at 15.50€. Main dish with starter or dessert, followed by coffee. I had the oeuf mayonnaise to start (he had the onion soup) and we both had the parmentier de canard (duck cottage pie) with roquette salad. All very good and stomach filling on an almost winter day.

I had wondered about that place. My son and his family stayed nearby, but I didn’t think to recommend it to them.

Mark will love this. We had a superb Chinese in town but it and it’s staff disappeared overnight. It laid empty for a long time. Somebody took it over, stripped all the walls, floors and ceilings but left it like that. It looks awful. They turned it into a trendy wine bar. Never went near. About a year ago they advertised roast dinners for just £4.95! Ridiculous. Never went near. Ate there tonight with friends who insisted it was ok.
And it was! A huge plate of perfect roast dinner (2 pork, 1 beef, 1 chicken) for under 20 quid the lot (plus drinks of course). Surroundings awful but food as good as any pub.

If/when I get back to the UK again I shall put it on my list. Sounds good value.

I spent too much time in restaurants. A very good ne in Poznan. Could get a Michelin star imo. A fantastic ´St Jacques’ on pears cut in very small pieces. Then a piece of deer. The next day we celebrated the 84 years of the MIL with a fantastic piece of meat. The next day a restaurant in liege that serves tapas but with more than 30 min between ordering no getting the food. So we left hungry And yesterday a Thai restaurant. A Pad Thai. Quite good. Nothing for next week !!!

You should become a food critic, Whatagain, and get paid for all that restaurant-hopping!

I was some time on a forum about food and read the posts of the experts. What a bunch of infatuated people these experts were. I prefer to give recommendations to nice people if they ask …

There's a pub chain here that does a carvery for £7.95 (£5.95 for a small plate). Usually it's turkey, beef, pork or ham plus loads and loads of veg. It's packed every day from 12pm to closing time! 12 - 2 it's all pensioners and they pile up their plates. My sister Sue loves the place but I'm not mad about just stuffing my face until I cant move.
Tomorrow I'm going to Wyggston House in town to meet up with ex-colleagues. The venue is alleged to be the oldest house in Leicester city and the food is much nicer...main courses are £12 - £27..the more expensive ones being fillet steak etc. I'll probably just have one of their fancy sandwiches (£8) because I don't like to eat much at lunchtime.

No photos, but we went out to lunch yesterday at a tavern called Iron Horse Grill. Mr. Kimby had a BBQ beef sandwich and I had a bacon chicken ranch sandwich, both very good. The sides included an option of soup or salad or fries, and we both chose soup. I had a yummy black bean soup, and Mr. Kimby got the French onion soup. The portions were huge, and we’ll be having the leftovers for dinner tonight.

I went to a Chinese today. I had menu B. He had 23 and then 58. The 69 was beef with onions. Wonder why I looked that one up…

My last restaurants involved one too expensive (bad quality price ratio but quality ok) close to home : les 3 canards (the 3 ducks).
Recently I tried the small local ones (we would say brasseries) for lunch. And I tried l’Ananas (the pineapple) cheap pastas and good américain (tartare in French) la tartine (the slice of bread) with a very good américain and le raidillon (which has the tail of a F104 starfighter plane embedded in its wall) with a correct americain.
Tonight was spare ribs (small pig ribs with tender meat inbetween).
We have drastically reduced the frequency of the restaurants close to home they are (became ?) simply too expensive. pre Covid we would eat correctly for 50 euros pp. now it is 70 pp. we no longer can or want to afford.

And so yesterday was a mix of nice hors d œuvre (entrees in French). Followed with a steak accompanied by Kartoffeln in Ofen mit sour cream. I asked it rare and got it medium. With a primitivo de Puglia. Great.
