I had forgotten when Serge Gainsbourg almost looked "healthy." He looked like such crap at the end that it is that image that is stuck in my head.

I find young Serge quite attractive.

Near the end, this television appearance on a prime time variety show is the one that sticks most in French minds.

Yes, I've seen that one, K. Sad. Or high satire, not sure. I'm sure he smelled like a wine-soaked ashtray.

I love this Aretha version of Sam Cook's "A change is gonna come". I find that sung so soulfully by a woman, it adds another level of complexity to this early Civil Rights anthem.

That is indeed a classic. I am not a Gainsbourg fan but some of his songs hit my target anyway.
(Interestingly enough, that video is blocked in France because it is supposed to be watched through other media, but it is not a problem -- I know it very well already.)

This song arrived in the world when my life was in total upheaval (parental divorce, raging hormones...) and something about it burned into my mind forever with its strange lyrics and unusual tune.

That was the first record I ever bought. I was nine years old. It had Penny Lane on the B-side so you had a John song and a Paul song to complete the agridolce. That album and Sgt. Pepper were both released in 1967, whatever they were doing at the time certainly didn't make them lazy!
Why did eco-funk never become a thing?

Interesting.....I had just been looking at a Central Park information page and thinking I'd go HERE when you posted the link to Strawberry Fields.

It has been decided (and I pretty much agree) that this song from 1972 is the best French song about summer holidays ever written.

My son bought me a 3 CD set of 1960's hippy hits. Some are quite naff now but some, particularly the West Coast groups have stood the test of time pretty well.

Kerouac, yes, summer holiday romance, but in a later generation, "Voilà l'été" is a classic URBAN summer song. The video is really shitty though, and rather "whitewashed". bixa, you do realize that one can calculate your age from that statement... Great song ... and dance. He had a four octave range as well! Very sad about his very early heart attack and death. Sad life overall, in some ways of his doing, but also very much a reflection of systemic racism at the time. Here is a later song that refers to Jackie and to Marvin (Gaye) Nightshift... In heaven (despits not entirely "saintly" lives), as late-night musicians, and in the daily lives of thousands of African-American auto workers who went north to Detroit...

Oh, LaGatta ~ my birthday is on my profile for all the world to see. I am certainly not ashamed of my age & am undoubtedly less of an asshole than I was say 30 years ago. Must remark, though, that the video you posted reminds one of how very pretty young people are, even when dressed in 80s drag. (barf). Haven't heard that song for ages -- thanks for posting.

Oh, me too, Bixa.
Here are two charming versions of a song that's been echoing around my head since we passed a tree still spring green against the Missouri hills along I-44. If I'd been alone I'd have wailed it the rest of the way home.
A sweet homegrown one:
And then Allison and Lyle. They sing the heck out of it:

My husband hosted a master class this afternoon taught by this man, Adrien Moignard. Bob plays rhythm, is hooked on jazz manouche. My contribution was making coffee and tea, and the cheesecake. Nice to have twelve musicians in the living room jamming away. We'd heard Adrien at Atelier Charonne in Paris last June. He and another group are touring, doing three nights here in town.

Driving in this morning the radio played "Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly which I haven't heard for years but was probably the first pop song I can remember. It's a simple masterpiece and up there in my top 10 ever.

I have listened to this multiple times this morning, I love it so much.
Le Maître Aznavour singing about his life in the theatre, what we in the biz call a shmactor - someone who's just a little too in love with himself. Keeps me humble.
