About a week ago, I looked outside of our house and saw this nube flameante at sunset. I'd been inside, taking pictures of a rosca de reyes y chocolate party we were giving, so I had my camera with me and shot several pics of this cloud. This last pic was post edited in Picasa and had a Boost filter and Focal Zoom applied. By the way, the view is towards the east.

Re: #509 ~~ That's no way to speak of the berserkers, Mossie! But what a lovely picture and I appreciate the scientific explanation.
DonC, those are magnificent. We really must get you out of the kitchen more often.
Also, if I didn't already have a nice handle, I'd be sorely tempted to snitch your descriptive phrase for those glowing beauties.

The jet stream Saw this as I was coming home on the bus this morning and rushed outside with the camera. This shows the jet stream which dictates our weather here. The band of cloud was moving quickly from left to right and marks the boundary between the cold polar air mass and the warmer tropical air. It presages a change but in fact the strong Scandinavian low is blocking progress and the two air masses will now fight a war over us. Which one wins will dictate our weather for the next few days, but it may be a long struggle. At the moment we are still in the cold air, but let us hope that might prevails and it warms up.

We seem to get a rainstorm most afternoons - a break in the darker clouds revealed the sun shining on some cumulus?....Cumulonimbus clouds? Mossie?

Yes Tod, a nicely developing cu-nim. The fully developed version grows an anvil shaped top and means thunderstorm. Not to be tangled with by aircraft unless you want a bumpy ride. The power involved is enormous, all derived from the suns heat, can equal a small nuclear device . Wikipedia is quite good on them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumulonimbus_cloud

With this most dismal of winters in the last 50 years, the Parisian sky is just clouds with no distinguishing characteristics that can be photographed.
