Not in the same league as Kimby's treat, but ~
SO satisfying to have the label come off a jar or bottle easily.

The Bluebirds are back! And the Tree Swallows!
The lake is still frozen for at least another month, but the scouts are inspecting our nest boxes, and it’s so nice to see them again.

The French presidential campaign ends tonight at midnight. That's a relief since they all received equal media time, even the ridiculous ones. Of course then it starts again on Monday for 12 more days but with only 2 candidates instead of 12.

On French game shows, where the cash prizes are rarely outstanding, more and more winners have been donating their winnings to Ukraine.

At the store today, I finally found some mustard and bought it. It was a brand that costs double what I usually pay, but I chose to join the mass hysteria since I am almost out of mustard.
Meanwhile, I saw that all of the oil shelves were completely stocked -- exclusively with olive oil! I guess they got tired of the spectacle of empty shelves where the colza, sunflower, peanut and other yellow oils should be.

Lots of olive oil here too but almost nothing else. There was a bit of canola oil the other day but the price had tripled so a lot of people were putting back the bottles after checking the price.

I haven't bought anything but olive oil or butter for cooking in years. I'd barely notice if canola/sunflower/soybean oil entirely ceased to exist.

It's a question of frying temperature. Have you ever seen french fries made in olive oil? Or fried chicken?

Well, that's just great if you live in Crete. Has anybody told McDonald's and Burger King?
I am just very happy that the elite here can still use as much olive oil as they want while the proletariat tries to make do with cheaper oils. But who cares about the proletariat?
Meanwhile in hometown, USA....
(but you can see all of the graphs and statistics for yourself...)

I fry certain things, and olive oil is toxic for frying. Very unhealthy diet is the Meditteranean one for this reason. Hang on a minute.......

For sure the price of olive oil is far out of reach of the comman man in Meditteranean countries. Hang on a minute......

Is everybody living in a Mediterranean country? France is a Mediterranean country and yet olive oil costs 6-7 euros a litre while rapeseed or sunflower oil costs 2 euros.
And the Mediterranean diet is not based on fried foods.

We go through a litre of oil in maybe six months, probably longer than that even. If it cost twice or even ten times as much it'd still be a insignificant expense. What are people doing, deep frying turkeys or chugging it down by the glassful?

I agree that my olive oil lasts much longer than any yellow oil. In my neighbourhood, which I think that everybody has understood is in a lower class area, the people buy their cooking oil in 3-litre containers because they use so much of it. Many Maghrebi and African dishes are absolutely swimming in oil, including their pastries, and they would never use olive oil for this, without any consideration for possible health benefits. I myself would never use olive oil for making French toast, potato pancakes or frying eggs, just to mention the first three things that pop into my mind.

If olive oil were toxic for frying, everyone in Spain would have died off long ago. When I was a child, churros were fried on the street in huge tubs of olive oil. I imagine that hasn't changed. Certainly Italy is happily frying away in olive oil. When I buy Spanish olive oil in the 5-liter bottle from AmazonMexico, it works out to 124mxn/6.24usd/5.81eur per liter & is very nice oil. I recently got some on special at Walmart which worked out to 118mxn per liter, also a nice oil. When I make salsa macha, which uses a bunch of oil, I buy canola because it's cheaper, but haven't checked the price on that lately. Fumobici, are you sure that is all the olive oil used at your house? You must be underestimating.

My sister got married this weekend. She invited me to join her at her hair and makeup session - and treated me to a head full of curls!
The beautician (who is the owner of the shop) would not take any money from us, called it her “wedding present”.
Mr. Kimby really liked it, once the Jon-Benet Ramsay curls relaxed a bit. Now I’m gonna have to experiment with curling my own hair. I’d be happier with “beachy waves” for an everyday look.

Fumobici, are you sure that is all the olive oil used at your house? You must be underestimating. Perhaps only three or four months. I'm not a big oil user when I cook and on the rare occasion I want something properly fried, I'll go out to somewhere that is good at it. I probably use more dressing salads than cooking with.

Well, if you say so, Fumobici. Except for that one sauce, I use olive oil for everything. I don't deep fry, so none gets used that way. It occurs to me that olive oil is one of those things I never let myself run out of, so probably I don't have a clear idea of how much I use. Still, I'm sure it must be more than what you say you're using. I’d be happier with “beachy waves” for an everyday look. Kimby a very close friend of mine recently told me she was getting a perm. I was instantly horrified, as I pictured those brillo pad perms from the '80s that straight-haired people subjected themselves to. Anyway, this friend said she was sick of rolling her hair, something I can't imagine doing, nor have I done since I was in early high school, back during the Pleistocene. I believe she had naturally at least wavy hair at one time, but went gray early. Her hair is now snow white & apparently quite straight. (I don't know for sure, due to her faithful rolling.) So .......... she got the perm and sent me a picture. Wow! Perms have really progressed. It looked exactly like "beachy waves" and totally totally natural, even at the hairline. It was super pretty and she is so happy about it. She says all she has to do is dampen it in the morning and scrunch it & she's good to go.
