Aside from Queenie I don't have much time for the royals.

Queenie won’t be with us a lot longer, though will she? Charles and Camilla will attempt to follow QE2’s class act, but with Charles being a senior citizen himself, many of us will live to see William and Kate taking the throne. Presuming the role of royals aren’t abolished.

I saw that those people had less luck in Jamaica where some of the locals made it clear that having QE2 as monarch of Jamaica is ridiculous.

Tell me what you think about this little event. King George and his wife Elizabeth (Lizzies parents)were touring little towns in Africa somewhere in the Bush. Queen went at midday and changed into a stunning sparkly long dress even though it was hot. She donned her sash of the Garter, fabulous jewellery and the crown she wore at George's coronation. When asked why she did this she said, "the people have walked long distances to see an English Queen and so I am going to show them one"
Was she kind or patronising?

I think a floating skateboard like Marty McFly would have impressed them a lot more.

Those were different times, and colonial subjects often came from simpler cultures. “Impressing the natives” had a whole different meaning then.
Now the Queen’s subjects are more sophisticated and need to hear about what the monarchy can do for them, besides showing off designer gowns and fabulous jewels.

I don't know that any culture can be deemed "simpler", assuming we're using the first world as the standard, but I see what you're getting at, Kimby. As far as your question, Questa, I think it addresses something beyond whether or not people venerate monarchy. It is the public, after all, which sets other mere humans on pedestals. The queen in your anecdote, out of noblesse oblige gave the public exactly what they'd come there to see. People who follow "influencers" or other celebrities feel that they're owed the maintaining of image by their idols and we're often treated to the spectacle of what happens when said idols fall from their pedestals.

I basically understand the British attachment to royalty due to history. After all -- British Empire, most powerful country in the world, pageantry for awhile... and it ended but it seems to have left a warm and fuzzy feeling in the British population. At the same time, if more Commonwealth countries decide that a foreign head of state is inappropriate, I think that the idea will lose more and more lustre. And if some of the big countries finally cast this off (Australia, Canada...), I see the beginning of the end.
What I don't understand is the Norway-Sweden-Denmark business, not forgetting of course Benelux. They have royalty of extremely limited importance and yet they keep them for some incomprehensible reason. Less "evolved" countries like Italy or Greece got rid of this stuff in the 20th century, and Spain is probably not too far off.

While the barbaric French simply chopped the heads off theirs, now they're all grumpy because they miss the effect. King Macron anyone??

Questa, i think Kate was spot on : people want to see a queen - or don't want to see her at all.
Mossie : spot on. French love the priviledges but hate the priviledged ones.
Btw Benelux is no country.

Isn't Benelux a trade agreement?(largely superceded by the EU).
The Italian monarchy was abolished by referendum, largely because the reigning monarch under fascism approved the Hitlerian 'racial laws'.
I do with the peoples of Spain would follow suit. I'm less familiar with the relation beteen the Greek monarchy and the postwar dictatorship.
These people (don't forget the Saudis!) remain the world's richest welfare cases.

Laziness is no excuse.
Btw in Belgium, the royal family is one of the few things we haven't yet regionalized. Like the Red Devils.

Even though I of course think any country having a monarchy is ridiculous, I do have my personal favorites among the current crowned heads. Elizabeth II of course, her eldest son & his wife are people I will read about with interest. But the crown jewel, as it were, style-wise is hands down Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. I'm an avid consumer of reports on her clothes, hats, & jewelry. Let's face it, a 50-year-old woman who consistently eclipses anyone else in a picture with her has real star power.

I actually felt sorry for Wills & Kate - this tour has been a near disaster. I suspect it was designated by the palace as part of the jubilee celebrations. I don't think we will be seeing any British royalty in these parts again. Once the Queen goes the Commonwealth will cease to exist.

Nothing royal about those kids.
I think that Charles and Camilla need to sink the royal ship, and then we can all be relieved.

Bixa - I saw this footage yesterday of Charles & Camilla doing a quick jig - I admit it did make me chuckle. Charles has become much more comfortable in his own skin as he grows older and Camilla seems to pretty much roll with the punches. Quite a few years ago this visit would have been pretty much deemed unthinkable.

Considering who they are, they still manage to convey a certain warmth. It's probably the glow from the world's longest running love affair, something noteworthy in itself.

Since Bixa won’t let me post this type of image on the red carpet thread, here’s another of Kate Middleton showing off her gorgeous good taste.

No, poor Bixa is going through a late life crisis. That's why she was forbidden from making any comments on any of my posts. Life is much easier now. You should hope for the same treatment.

Kerouac and Bixa, I really wish you’d have a conversation and reconcile. In my opinion, you’d both be better off. As Patrick so wisely stated in another totally unrelated thread, life’s too short.

Some sort of jubilee for queenie Come on, Cheerykins ~ even you must know what it is! Not that I am a greedy person, and it's true that I already own the best doll any girl could have, BUTT ....... I'd read about this object of desire & of course want it. Last night my son told me his girlfriend got one. Yes, I'm sick with envy. Not only but also, she got the last one in the store & they're now selling on ebay for over 4 1/2 times what she paid, which was the original asking price. Well, even if I had one I'd never sell it, preferring to love it forever ~
