Tonight the beeb have a special on about Queenie Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen supposedly full of previously unseen footage/home movies handed over by HRH. 'In her own words'
I doubt I'll see it because Jeff has episodes of 'War of the Worlds' to watch..no doubt it will be repeated umpteen times.

There was a headline and excerpt about those movies on the BBC website the other day but their search engine is even worse than AnyPort's so I can't find it.

Bixa, Maxima is spectacular (Latina after all). But as we must never forget, her dad was a henchman of the evil dictatorship in Argentina. Staging phony wars against the equally evil dictatorship in Chile as they returned opposants to their respective countries of origin. Maxima is blameless, but it is quite a heritage...
I know quite a few refugees from those countries and even from Uruguay, with approx the same population as Montréal.

Well, I imagine she wouldn't have gotten the education she did, nor have had certain "ins" without a certain amount of hard cash & family influence. That said, she really is (or was) quite a force in her field.

The new Australian Labor government has named a junior minister for the republic. And not a moment too soon.

A few houses around here have bunting and flags out. My sisters live in more rural areas where there are lots of events planned on village greens, in pub gardens etc.

Will you be showing your support in this way? Judging by the woman's right cheek, she is either an American or making known her opinion that the US should still be part of The Empire ~ (photo by Neil Hall, European Press Photo Agency)

I went into town today, there were lots of things being set up. Stages for open air concerts, bunting etc...flags all over the place. I was only tempted by these for the chaps. I shall watch the excitement on tv..might wander around the estate with my camera and see if there's anything exciting going on...but don't hold your breath

Those are cute. I'm glad that the British have something to celebrate, since they don't have an Independence Day or a date to celebrate the revolution.

My darling Bixa, if I could I would be charging around taking pics everywhere. On Sunday we are invited to lunch at one of my sister's..she lives in a village where there will probably be lots of bunting so I should be able to capture something there. The city centre stuff is out..it will be heaving and Leicester still has a lot of covid cases...can't risk it with a vulnerable son I'm afraid.

The village celebration will probably be more charming, besides safer health-wise and less exhausting .

I wandered around the local area taking a few snaps for research purposes (for Bixa ). On my estate there are around 80 houses I think, around 5 had some sort of jubilee decoration...even if it's just a plastic flag hanging out of the window! There are 2 large estates of social housing nearby too. A few of them have got street parties of some sort being set out...but very low key. I think that it's largely because we live in quite a poor area, lots of unemployment and lots of single parents. The more affluent areas (towards the park, near where my parents used to live) have more going on. Tomorrow we are going to my sister's house for lunch, she lives in a village where I think that there may be more enthusiasm for the celebration. I'll take my camera.

You are the loveliest, dear Cheery!
Thanks for the socio-economic lowdown on local acknowledgement of the jubilee, as well. British people on social media can be quite scathing about the celebration, generally because of very understandable disgruntlement because of socio-economic conditions in the UK.

This celebration reminds me in many ways of the US Bicentennial. in 1976.
I was in NY at that time and will never forget seeing the Tall Ships in two different locations. One was offshore in my hometown, and we had been given an approximate time that they would be sailing by. Many, many local residents and some vacationers were gathered at the beach just down the road from my mother's house. It was great fun.
Then, I went to NYC to stay with friends and got to see the ships enter NY Harbor. I still get chills thinking about how exciting it all was. The firework display was spectacular, and everyone seemed to display a huge surge of patriotism and pride.
The sad thing is that given the decisiveness of the country at present I somehow can't imagine having that surge of pride toward my country ever again.

I'm not a big fan of the Royals as such, but I do love dear Queen Elizabeth. That's why it distresses me to see her looking braless in that lovely dress. The video was charming like Kerouac said. I just would like her to obtain the services of a better corsetier!

Yes. The news channels say that Charles and William have gone to Balmoral where the queen has been since she left Windsor a while ago. The Queen is under medical supervision and her condition is said to be a 'cause for concern'.

Though less sensational than Diana’s tragic death, QE2’s passing will surely be an historical event. Many of us have never known a time with another monarch in England.

Now is a time for the Queen's family to get together and support her and each other. There is a chance that she'll make a good recovery, after all all she's only 96.

after all all she's only 96 According to the latest statistics, life expectancy for women at birth in the UK is 82.9 years, so she has had a good run.

Here is the protocol whenever it happens:
* Once the Queen has died, Operation London Bridge begins.
* Once London Bridge is down, the Queen's private secretary, Sir Edward Young, KCVO will be responsible for informing the Prime Minister before the information is released to the 15 other countries where the Queen is head of state and the rest of the 36 Commonwealth nations.
* This is done by the Foreign Office’s Global Response Centre which is housed at an unknown location in London.
* The first time the public becomes aware of her death is when a notice is placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace.
* All staff will wear a black armband on the left arm, which must measure three-and-a-quarter inches wide.
* A statement will then be released to the Press Association and other news outlets.
* At this stage, main TV channels will pull regular programmes and newsreaders will wear black suits and ties.
* DJs on-air will see a blue light flash, which means to cut to news ASAP, and blanket coverage will begin.
* As soon as Queen Elizabeth dies, Prince Charles will become King.
* He is permitted to choose his own name, and is expected to become King Charles III.
This is just the beginning of the protocol. It goes on and on and on.
I love the idea of a notice being put on the gates of Buckingham Palace. That shows that it is a really modern country.
