I was watching Sky News this afternoon and saw a Tory politician that I had never seen before. He looked like he was at least 70 years old but he had an outrageous blond floppy wig that would put Boris Johnson to shame. As he talked, he kept swishing his long locks out of his face. He was ranting about how disappointed he was that Rishi Sunak was taking over and would have very much preferred if the members of the Conservative Party had been able to vote on the new PM, because that is the right thing to do and the members are all very wise. The Sky News journalist did her best to keep a straight face during the interview, but she had to struggle a few times. Anyway, I didn't catch the name of this guy, and it was not displayed on the screen so I went to Google and typed: Who is the old British politician with the ridiculous blond wig?Google immediately informed me that it is Michael Fabricant, age 72, still in denial about the thing on his head and claiming that it is his real hair. Do you Brits have any more national treasures like this? (All of our countries have people like this, but they are usually not elected to parliament.)

God, I hope not.
I hope that Rishi also dumps a few. Coffey and Rees-Mogg, the childcatcher, in particular and Priti doesn’t make a return.

Did you see Rishi bypass Matt Hancock (disgraced health minister) when he was shaking hands with the party faithful after the announcement?
Leicester's south asian majority are very chuffed, especially as they are celebrating Diwali atm.

Meanwhile, up here in Scotland, the First Minister had plenty to say.

Ben Wallace is staying as defence secretary. James Cleverley as foreign secretary and Jeremy Hunt is still the chancellor. So many going in to number 10 not sure what positions they'll get.

Maybe they are being sent to the kitchen to wash the dishes. They'd probably all watch a pleb do it (from the doorway)...maybe Ben Wallace would load the dishwasher but I doubt the others would set foot in the kitchen

I read that Jacob Rees-Smog dated his resignation letter on St Crispin's Day. What a pretentious moron.

I'm sure most voters were already convinced that politicians will say anything to be elected. Will they even bother with election campaigns any more? Or will politicians pretend to tell the truth and voters pretend to believe them?

If only BJD...
The one thing I am grateful for is we are not getting 3rd class mail since we are presently getting our mail delivered to a post office box and it doesn't include all the junk mail that comes during election time.

I wish Rishi Sunak would wear longer trousers. You made me look for a picture. I don't see anything odd -- styles change and I don't believe trousers are supposed to "break" on the shoes any more. At least his ankles aren't visible.

I am reading some alarming things about the NHS. What has broken this time? Long slow entropy as funding has not kept pace with demography and demand, increasing shortages of experienced staff both caused by and leading to burnout. There's been no real long-term workforce planning, so it's always fire-fighting problems as they arise. Covid knocked the service sideways (nearly), leading to backlogs and waiting lists soaring. And there are always good reasons for anxiety about this or that potential problem around the corner, as everyone campaigns to get their issue up the priority list. The current flashpoint is pay negotiations for nurses (given that, as everywhere else, pay has not been rising in line with inflation for years), with ballots approving strike action across much of the country, though not immediately.

Thanks for the explanation. Here the government has been pretty good (recently) about raising salaries and recruiting more staff, but it still isn't enough. For one thing, nobody can find enough staff. In the hospital system, most of the doctors in France are from Tunisia.

Oz has the same problems but the bite is more like a strong nibble. Everywhere in the hospitals they are advertising for all staff following the burn out of 2020-2022. Ambulance crews are having to stay with their casualties waiting for a vacant slot in admissions, some for hours.

Okay, I did not understood what happened today in parliament but considering the fact that the same party has been in power for 12 years, why does it seem as though there have been several coups d'état?
In any case, the British experts appear to be saying that the country is going down the drain.

The powers that be have decided that the Scots are not allowed to hold another independence referendum. Very undemocratic....I wonder how the English would have reacted if they'd been told by the EU that they weren't entitled to have a brexit vote. Pft. There are rumours around town that the conservative party want to abolish the role of Leicester mayor. Our mayor (Peter Soulsby) has been voted into office repeatedly since the position was first created. Leicester is staunchly labour and Soulsby often clashes with Westminster. To clear up any confusion we have both a 'Lord Mayor' and a 'Mayor of Leicester' The Mayor of Leicester is directly elected by the people of Leicester. The Mayor leads the council and its councillors, to provide services for the people of Leicester. The Mayor also performs a broader role representing the interests of Leicester's citizens on a national and international level. Elections for the Mayor of Leicester are held every four years. Peter Soulsby is ALWAYS re-elected... The LORD mayor is a largely ceremonial role usually held by a respected local councillor...we don't vote for him or her...I think the council members elect him or her and the position lasts for a year...they get to wear a fancy robe, hat and chain. There's probably more....
