I didn't even read this article (from The Guardian of course), but I thought the title was fascinating.
Brexit will endure after Sunak’s deal, but Brexitism is dying and Johnsonism may be dead.
Brexitism? Johnsonism?

According to the news the shortage of certain vegetables is due to bad weather in Spain. It's mostly tomatoes, peppers, raspberries etc. Things that are out of season here. We used to have suppliers growing salad crops year round in big greenhouses, but the cost of heating and grow-lighting is prohibitive so growers in the uk stopped being able to grow out of season crops...and supermarkets source the majority of stuff abroad. We are getting used to eating stuff that's in season...happily some things store well...so we still have root vegetables and basics.
There dont seem to be shortages in the EU but some bright spark said that tomatoes and peppers are 'staying in the first safe country they arrived at' ...referring to the government's policy on refugees....(non-white ones anyway)

Yes, we import all of the same stuff in France, and there is no shortage of anything. Prices have risen about 10% of course.

British politicians are absolute geniuses. Look at Brexit and all the masssive improvements everywhere to be seen, look at the shining examples of BoJo and Liz Truss. So much winning, the UK must be tired of so much winning.

British politicians are absolute geniuses. Look at Brexit and all the masssive improvements everywhere to be seen, look at the shining examples of BoJo and Liz Truss. So much winning, the UK must be tired of so much winning. Apathy. Our choice at the ballot box is so appalling that most voters don't bother. I always vote if there is an opportunity to, but I'm afraid many people that I know don't. If it was a legal requirement maybe people would take more notice of the terrible system and the poor choice.

It's interesting that for so long, getting the right to vote was fought for by women, by those who were not landowners, etc. People still line up for hours in some countries to vote. Meanwhile, where the right to vote has been accepted for years, there is apathy and not bothering. Perhaps if it was obligatory, better candidates would appear and try to appeal to a wider audience?

Isn’t it obligatory in Australia?

With reference to the vegetable shortages, the prices in EU supermarkets are very high. A Swedish chap talking about it on The Guardian fb page talks about tomatoes and cucumbers costing more than meat and fish atm. Maybe our supermarkets are unwilling to pay the increased prices as their profit margins won't allow it.

Isn’t it obligatory in Australia? Yes. And apparently they make quite a party of if, with sausage stands outside polling centres.

re prices in EU supermarkets. I just came home from the supermarket and I can tell you that vegetables here are much cheaper than meat and fish. Bell peppers from Spain were over 6€/kilo, which is really high but of course they are not in season. I didn't look at tomatoes because they are not good at this time of year anyway so I never buy them.
I noticed that cheese prices have gone up quite a lot but those are mostly not imported. Mustard still missing on the shelves.

Tomatoes in Paris are about 2.95€ a kilo.

Tomatoes are about the same here in the US. I don't notice prices at the supermarket being much different between the US and the EU. Yes some things are cheaper or more expensive on one side or the other, but overall it's similar.

It's really hard for us to compare prices because various vegetables have extremely variable popularity depending on the country, not to mention how close we may or may not live to the source. But it is still a bit strange that so much produce has completely disappeared in England. You would think that it would still be there even if totally overpriced. In France we get a lot of winter stuff from Spain and Morocco (and unfortunately also Kenya and Chile). Have we bought it all and not left anything for the English?

I've always thought that voting should be mandatory. Ex-colleague was having a right old moan to me about the state of the country so I asked her who she voted for. She said she never votes so I told her she has no right to moan. I think she had a lightbulb moment. Another ex-colleague, a young teacher, said he voted Conservative because his mum and dad told him to.

Of the OECD members, only Australia and Luxembourg enforce their compulsory voting law. Belgium, Greece, Mexico and Turkey have a compulsory voting law but it is not enforced.

From my experience ...Its hard to really get to the bottom of the fruit and veg shortages where I live . Yes some of the supermarkets have a dearth ...but if I go to my local farm shop or the market stalls in town I see there is the usual array. But... prices in my local farm shop are slightly more expensive in comparison to supermarkets . The market stalls though are really not and the choice is varied. And then of course there is the egg debate ... I took this photo at my town centre market stall last week ...not a Coffey recommended turnip in sight and plenty of tomatoes in the background www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/therese-coffey-turnips-tomato-shortages-b2288274.htmllive.staticflickr.com/65535/52701194229_54ba9ae4f0_c.jpg

Prince Charles made 35 visits to France. King Charles III will make his very first state visit to France later this month, followed by a state visit to Germany. There have been no state visits by a British sovereign since 2015. It's almost as though the United Kingdom decided that Europe is important.

I think that the main reason is that they prefer a country that doesn't have national identity cards, making it so easy for them to slip through the cracks ad even multiply their identities.

Good point Kerouac. It is also because we are such a soft touch, give them a house and money, I am annoyed that they send them to the old airfield at Manston to process them. They could be housed there, there are some nice large hangars to keep the weather off them and they could doss down there. Chuck in a loaf of bread and a bottle of water each day.

I’d always wondered why so many try to escape France for the UK. As for Stanley Johnson, your comment gave me a good laugh this morning, bjd. Wasn’t his mother French?
