Winter time again tomorrow in Europe, dear members! Don't forget to go and modify your profile to change the Anyport clock.
Americans and Canadians have another week before they need to do this.

I hate to nit-pick, but could we have a set of maximum dimensions on photos (even of knockers)? It makes loading up the page a rather bumpy experience. Please resize the OP pictures. Thank you.

European members will remember that to adjust the time on this site, they must enter the "modify my profile" zone and change the "DST" option on the clock.
American members will remember to do this next week.

Tod2, it appears that you did not upload your photo to a photo hosting site before putting the image tags around it. You can upload your photo to www.imageshack.com without even registering, then you copy the direct link that is provided. Click the little image box here (second icon that looks like a framed picture) and then paste the code from ImageShack between the brackets. (I removed your incorrect code above which showed where you had stored your photo.)

Sometimes people reply to the last post on a page but they don't realize the thread has more pages.
The forum has been fixed so that now Quick Reply will only show up after the last post in a thread.

Some members have made requests for ways to make viewing the forum more comfortable.
Two new skins have been designed for this purpose.
They have identical colors, but one has enlarged type. It is called "big buttons". The other has the size type that is default on the forum. It is called "big buttons regular font".
You can visit Port Authority to see the catalog of skins or to read "Your Profile" for how to change skins.

Europeans (and anyone else who might be changing time) are reminded to go into their profile and to change the setting "currently observing DST" from no to yes (or the opposite if they are in the southern hemisphere). This will adjust the time indicated at the top of the page and on the posts accordingly.

Don C, to embed a youtube video you have to use 'reply' instead of 'quick reply'.
Copy the url from your selected video, paste it in the message box, highlight it, then click on the youtube button. It's the first one on the left, bottom row.

Welcome.
Click on Profile in the top menu bar.
Click on Modify Profile.
Go to the 4th section down - Account Preferences - and click on Select Skin.
You'll get an alphabetized drop-down menu of skins.
The plainest ones are "canvas", "very plain", "verdigris", and "suit up".
Note to anyone who has trouble seeing text that floats over the background: highlight it & it will show up as white on black.

Several new skins are now available.
kimono black, kimono red, lotus, retro bambi, serenity, verdigris, and watch the birdie
The default skin, Streamline Moderne, now has a darker version, for those whose computers make it too light.
If the background of a skin makes it too hard to read the horizontal menu or the small letters above the forum body, pass your pointer over those letters while holding down the left click. It will cause a negative effect that makes the words stand out.

Any Port is an English-language forum with many different nationalities participating. Members from different nationalities enrich this kind of forum a great deal and are very welcome here. Mocking of a country or its people will not be tolerated, and rudeness of any sort is unnecessary and unwelcome.

The tone and layout of Any Port are self-evident, so you should have no problems finding the correct place to post your ideas or experiences.
We would like all members to feel comfortable in every area of the site and not decide to post their recipes, movie viewing or latest holiday all in the same place for personal convenience. Any Port is a collective effort by all of its members, so please place your posts in the appropriate location for the benefit of everyone, including yourself. If necessary, a cleaning crew will come through the forum periodically to set things right.
There is no point in denying the fact that there will be deletions from time to time. While we would all like to believe that free speech is sacred and that censorship is reprehensible, there may be times when abusive posts, personal insults or confidential information need to be removed. Everyone signed an agreement with the Terms of Service of our hosting company when they registered here. Please refer to it if you should ever wonder if anything you want to post is appropriate or not.
Normal etiquette should already be understood by all, but it may be useful to say that online personal arguments are rarely great moments of posting. On a more mundane level, posts that consist of just one or two words, in response to someone, generally do not provide an adequate panorama of your intelligence to the other members. And, general good advice: try not to PUI.

This is to explain the items and settings in the Profile section. You can access your profile by clicking on your highlighted name anywhere in the forum or by clicking on Profile in the top menu. You can see anyone else's profile by clicking on the highlighted name of that person anywhere it appears in the forum, but you can only change your own profile. You can change items in your profile as often as you like. To access the options below, enter your Profile, then click on "Edit Profile". The first page is to set your Avatar (or not). On the top line you can either upload an image from your computer or use a url. The second line will take you to a selection of avatars provided by the forum. In either case, when you're happy with the results, click "Save Avatar Changes". For more Profile options, click on Settings while in Edit Profile mode. These are mostly self-explanatory, but it is recommended that you choose Yes for "Show Participated" and highly recommended that you choose Yes for "Enable Drafts". In Settings you also have the option of choosing a Theme. Go here to review the choices. When you have Settings selected to your satisfaction, go to the very bottom of the page on the left side and click "Save Account Settings". Now you can go on to Privacy. Again, mostly self-explanatory, but do bear in mind that remaining "visible" helps the forum by showing visitors that it has an active membership. When you are finished with this section, again go to the very bottom of the page on the left side and click "Save Privacy Settings". Now move on to Notifications. (Not every single option on this page is pertinent to Any Port.) You can check-mark in the left column for notifications via the forum. If you prefer or also want email notifications, use the pop-up menus to specify when you wish to receive them. At the bottom of the page you can also opt out of these choices for a specific board. Badges are n/a for Any Port.

Part One: Hotlinking (For the record, hotlinking is somewhat unethical. It's included here only as a learning tool for posting.) Go to Google Images -- images.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi -- and pick out a picture.Try to find one that is no more than 800 x 600. Hover over the picture to see size. Click on the chosen picture. When it opens, click on the words "View image" in the section to the right of the picture.
The picture will now open in a new tab. Look in the browser window and you will see the url for the picture. Copy that url.
Now click on the Image button in an Anyport Reply box.
Paste your copied url into the top slot, the one that says "Image URL:", then click on "Insert Image".NOTE: Either erase or paste over the "http://" that appears automatically in the Insert Image box. Take care not to have an extra http://. Part Two: Hosted Images These are the images you'll be posting to Anyport. Not only is it more ethical, the images are much more stable. Find an image hosting site.
An image hosting website is a service which allows users to store their photographs in a server. The service provides codes so that the user can allow others to view his/her pictures. Some popular free ones are Flickr, Photobucket, and Imgur. Do your research before choosing and pay attention to privacy features and to how long the site has been operating. (Older and well-reviewed are the better options.) Although many sites allow you to host pictures on them without registering, it is far better to register in order to always have access to your stored photos and to the full range of services offered by the hosting site.
Below are directions for using Flickr, Photobucket, & Imgur to post images on Any Port in a Storm.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flickr: In your Photostream or in an album, click on the photo you wish to post. When it opens, click on the down-pointing arrow in the far bottom right of the page. Choose "View all sizes" from the pop-up menu. When the new page opens, a selection of sizes will appear above the picture. Click on the size you want. Now right-click on the picture and choose "Copy Image Location" (or however it's worded in browsers other than Firefox). Paste that into the Insert Image box as directed in the directions under Hotlinking above.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Both Photobucket and Imgur are cracking down on allowing "3rd party" posting. In Photobucket's case, this means they have removed existing photos from forums and replaced them with gray squares unless you pay the high fee they demand.
Accordingly, Anyport is now recommending the use of Postimage, & there is a list of suggested other sites.
Postimage is exceptionally easy to use, plus an illustrated tutorial is available.
(if you are already a victim of the gray squares, go here to see how to fix this)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Photobucket: Click on the picture you wish to post. When it opens, right-click on the picture and choose "Copy Image Location" (or however it's worded in browsers other than Firefox). Paste that into the Insert Image box as directed in the directions under Hotlinking above.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Imgur: In your "images" section, click on the picture you wish to post. When it opens, look to the right of the picture and choose "Direct Link" from the options. Copy that and paste it in the Insert Image box as directed in the directions under Hotlinking above.

This is an explanation of the buttons above the message box in Reply or in Quick Reply. Each button will give you two sets of brackets (called "tags") containing code. You place what you want between the sets of brackets. You may prefer to write what you wish, then highlight it and press the desired button instead. Font Face allows you to choose a typeface. Font Size allows you to make your text larger or smaller than the default size. is for bold. is for italic. is for underline. is for strikeover. raises text slightly above the level of other text. lowers text slightly below the level of other text. makes text line up on the left, centers it, and lines it up on the right. will justify (make all lines the same width) your text. will create a table. creates a list. makes a horizontal line. will allow you to turn text into a live link. If you simply paste a url onto your message, it will show as-is. If you use the button you can substitute a clickable word or phrase. (highlight chosen text, click the link button, paste url into the second slot, covering the existing http://. is for creating an email. is for posting images. ( instructions) allows you to include videos other than youtube in a post. A youtube url will display as a video without needing to use this button. tags a member. lets you post a code in format. isolates text to show that it's a quote -- but it's not nearly as good as the methods shown under "Quoting" here. opens a box showing the ugly smilies. The old good smilies can be accessed by clicking "View All Smilies" at the bottom of the little box. is for embedding a social media site. allows you to yellow highlight text. Enclosing a live link within the tags of this button will turn the link into plain text. allows you to hide text or a picture until someone reading the post clicks on the Spoiler title. To see what the buttons can do, try them out in Reply and check by using Preview.
