What a picture! It's muted, yet so rich in color and detail.

This statue is causing a lot of controversy as its location since the 1950's at the top of a ski resort on US Forest Service land has resulted in a challenge by a Wisconsin atheist group. I think it's ugly, but wouldn't bother to fight about it. It used to be all white, and not realizing it was Jesus, I called him "St. Francis of Skii-sies!" Note the chipping paint and loss of one hand. Skiers have been known to take a whack at it with their ski poles, hence the fence surrounding the statue.

And remember: size doesn't count.

I wonder what the operative psychology is behind it when artists deliberately make penises smaller than they are in real life? It isn't terribly uncommon in art over the years and there must be a reason. Mind you it's less disturbing than if they'd gone the other direction!

I think anybody who has ever been to New York has taken that same photo.

True.
I never could get the shot to my liking. The thing is just too big.

It's the whole problem of trying to do the statue justice while still getting the entire Rockefeller center skyscraper into the picture. No can do.

I find #222 deeply satisfying. It's composed wonderfully and capturing the subtle shading & color of the building on the right was a real triumph.

Thanks!
I love your photo of the abstract lady statue on the balcony. Very cool.

It isn't terribly uncommon in art over the years and there must be a reason. Mind you it's less disturbing than if they'd gone the other direction! The artists knew that if the sculpture's penis was bigger than the potential art patron's, he wouldn't want to buy it. Unless, of course, it was a portrait of the patron. Then the bigger the better! Another possibility: they had to make the family jewels small enough to fit under a standard figleaf.

Not technically a statue, but a sculpture:

I had taken this photo for my caryatids thread and then when I got home I discovered that they were not caryatids at all!

That's a really interesting group. The legs, the eagle emblem, & the chairs have a real WPA look to them. But the faces & the standing figure seem much more "classic". Nice capture!

thanks, bixa. It was taken from the observation deck just below the dome of the Wisconsin capitol building. (The only state capitol to be built of granite, they say.)

No, I just took that one photo of Pan in the Buttes Chaumont. I admit that he has a lot of things going on there.

This creepy sculpture made an appearance in Black Swan, when Natalie Portman's character imagines it turning its head and looking at her.

I never saw the movie, so I'm wondering about the statue. Where is it located? MOMA?

Museum of the American Indian.
I'm sorry to say that it took me years to get around to exploring NYC's lesser-known museums, but I'm glad I do now.
