The German octopus has selected Spain to win tonight's match. I think the Germans are going to be making octopus soup soon. Here he is selecting the winner of an earlier match.

Ok yes, I know soccer is a huge deal in most of the world. From the way the news coverage and such goes, even huger than the Super Bowl. But I do not get why the French had huge government hearings into the World Cup team behavior. Do winners / well behaved teams get to have next year's games in their country and thus bring truck loads of tourist cash to their country? Outside of some cash concern such as that, I find it rather ridiculous the government should even involve themselves in sports stuff. Surely the government has better things they should be spending their time/effort/the country's money on?

The government had absolutely no business holding a hearing and FIFA told them that if there was any government interference in the football federation, the French team would be banned from competition in the future. The whole reason for this smoke screen is because the government is in a shitload of trouble and they are trying everything they can think of to distract public opinion from what is happening. It didn't work, though -- the French team is already forgotten and really the only person who got hurt was Nike -- just before the World Cup, they signed their biggest contract in history to outfit the French team for next few years -- 44 million euros. So the next time France plays (if ever), they will be wearing Nike instead of Adidas for the first time, and it is all money down the drain.

Kerouac, that makes much more sense.
I find I am a little sad for Germany, although they are a young team and so did very well just to get so far and hold up so well in the game against Spain. Looking forward to Sunday's game.

But first, the match for 3rd place... Germany or Uruguay? I guess I'll go for Germany this time.

Is anybody outside the States interested in the Super Bowl?
I was disappointed that Germany didn't win -- I liked the fact that they are a young, multi-cultural team that has been playing really well.

I'm not upset. It's a good, young team. The match showed their inexperience. They should go for Euro 2012 or WC 2014.
Don't know how motivated they still are to win the 3rd place.

Artists? As in ballerinas you mean? I'll go by what the local 'expert' tells me, after all he did play soccer in England and Europe, so he should know.

Every BB I've ever joined seems to have the wacky British poster who makes a point of insisting that the Sceptered Isle is in fact not a piece of Europe and is utterly immune to being convinced otherwise. When asked what continent Britain should be associated they can only muster sputtering histrionics. Always class wind up opportunity if the mood strikes

Oh no, I'll have to remember not to make that mistake around you then, Fumobici. ;D
I'm only half British though, so maybe I can be excused?

The Canadian trophy meet is the Grey Cup. (As the ice-hockey championship is the Stanley Cup). Both were named for Governors-General.
The World Cup is by fare the most popular sporting event in the world.

I can't help but wonder how octopus got into the predicting racket in the first place.
Did he show an usual alertness as he oozed around his tank? Did someone notice him riveted by a nearby TV during matches?

I was going to go to the movies tonight, but hell, I guess I'll watch Germany beat Uruguay anyway.
(But I will be quite happy if Uruguay wins, as much as I like the German team.)

Bravo to Spain, but what a laborious final. The Dutch team was as brutish as ever -- such a strangely unlikeable sports team from such a gentle nation!
