Hopfully we will end up with the slimmed down 'firm' promised by Charles. If we must have a monarchy at all.

I was reading that the next European country the most likely to abolish the monarchy is Spain. But it would probably need another scandal first, so perhaps the United Kingdom has moved to the head of the queue.

The build up to the coronation has been quite muted altho the media excitement is slowly mounting. Eurovisuon seems to be getting more coverage on tv, but the supermarkets are filled with 'celebration' paraphernalia...commemorative tins of biscuits, tea caddies, special cakes and union jack bunting is readily available if you should want it. My sister's gated community is having a celebration and there are a few street parties in the area. Nothing nearby because we're all raddled old republicans (as in non monarchists not as in crazed rifle toting Trump supporter!).
I expect that we will watch it on tv. For the music if nothing else, Charles always has good music. I shall provide a running buffet for any family members who can drag themselves away from the tv long enough to drop in.

I was interested to see an interview today of a young person who said that EII was of no interest since she had absolutely always been there, but the person is much more interested in CIII because he is just starting out and maybe something will happen.

That is an interesting point of view. I'm assuming the young person was from the UK, so does have a vested interest in how things play out.

There was also an interesting opinion piece on why Charles should pay for his own coronation, given that he is so wealthy that taxpayers should not have to do so. Especially that no other monarchies have such costly (or even any) coronation ceremonies.

You don't have to be a raving royalist to think that little twerp needed to get his comeuppance.

Articles in today's Guardian about republican ideas in both New Zealand and Australia. In neither place are plans for becoming a republic on the immediate agenda, but both prime ministers are in favour of their countries becoming independent republics. Visibly Charles doesn't have his mother's popularity although these republican thoughts have been around for a while. A quick google tells me that many Canadians also don't identify with having a British head of state.

It does seem somewhat antiquated.
It’s our last grasp on the Empire.

It seemed pretty sure that a number of the dominions would become republics after Elizabeth was gone. But I suppose that it is quite complicated to figure out how to do it in a polite and respectful way since most of these are polite ad respectful countries.

I don't think there's an issue about respect: if Australia's anything to go by, it's more that there's disagreement about what mechanism they want to replace the monarchy and the appointment of the GG on the recommendation of ?the PM/Parliament. Barbados spent about a year becoming a republic after announcing its intention in 2020.

The problem in Oz is that instead of asking "Do you want Australia to become a Republic...YES or NO" The last attempt tacked on lots of obscure details about the composition of the manner of choosing the leader etc. Even the most rabid republican wouldn't give a vote for something so dubious. Things are changing now. The mix of multicultural voters who didn't get brainwashed by "The Empire" is filling the gaps created by the passing of the "old school" . Our Parliaments are filled with young men and women, elected in their own right, who bring the histories of other countries and conditions for our consideration. The debate is going to be more honest politically as well. Hidden agendas will be exposed more readily...it is a different generation from that of the last attempt to become a Republic

Allegedly the viewing public will be invited to recite the oath of allegiance to the king and his descendants at the same time as the worthies at the coronation. Fat chance

I confess that that aspect seems particularly ridiculous to me. But I can imagine people doing it in an episode of Doctor Who under the control of the cybermen.

Camilla seems oddly detached, rarely looking at Charles.
The music is nice.

Must say i have zero interest. I like E2, but don't like Charles and this ceremony seems an uchrony to me. i mean, even mass is not celebrated in latin anymore, so royals could evolve too.

Wouldn't hurt him to crack a smile....
Whilst it may be visually stunning it's also a bit puffed up and bumbly. The days of jingoistic crowing should be behind us. It feels very out of date..but unfortunayely it's also strangely fascinating.

Charles looked like he was having the worst day of his life. Probably true. Camilla was trying not to laugh at how ridiculous it all is.
It would discourteous of me to expand my opinion of the few things I saw, but it is hard (for me) to believe that this sort of thing can happen in the year 2023.
Actually, I got home just as the glove was being put on and I immediately thought of The Avengers' Thanos glove, but I don't think that this one can rule the universe.

It is quite bonkers, but we lap it up. Put it down to British eccentricity. As you know..it's difficult...we KNOW it's all very silly and ridiculous. Wrong on so many levels. The people present in the Mall atm are having fun... Wonder how much it all cost us

I think they've been saying something along the line of £110,000,000 (balanced with the estimate that the royals are worth £2 billion in tourist revenue).
