Who is up for some mildly depressing humor? This looks entertaining and not too fluffy, plus the price is right: $1.99 in the US and Canada, Β£2.99 in the UK.

Great report, Whatagain.
I can see why you'd get depressed with that dark winter weather, but I agree with Bjd about the architecture -- everything can't be from one particular era, no matter how picturesque.
In the picture where you say you found the shopping center, it looks as though the part in the foreground expanded from an earlier center which can be seen in the background of the picture. In the picture immediately below that one, is the red brick tower setting on top of that beige building?!
Those yellow letters & numbers on the apartment building might be to show where to put something like electric meters, maybe.
I really love the colors used on buildings, particularly that gorgeous celadon green.

I have been interested in this movie ever since I first heard about it. Emma Stone is an interesting choice for the lead, as I consider her to be a very good actress, but I'm also put off by her as she strikes me as cold and even mean.
After having learned of the movie, I came across the book which it is based upon. I'll cover that over in the what we've been reading thread in Library, but suffice to say that it's quite obvious why someone would want to make a movie from it -- someone with vision and not much interested in boundaries. The book contains not one, but two unreliable narrators, with the more plausible one coming at the end of the book & given far less time. The first narrator's version would seem to be the basis for the movie. Interestingly, considering Kerouac's review, there is no graphic or even nearly graphic sex in the book. All is allusion, with nothing spelled out.

Priscilla Presley and Joan Collins went to the same incompetent plastic surgeon. Why can't they age gracefully? Amen! This is such a pet peeve of mine. Carving up your face trying to look as though you stayed in your twenties forever is a good way to wind up looking like a gargoyle. I am currently watching Shrinking. One of the main characters is an actress who is quite good and would be better if she could still move her face. I knew I knew her from some other show, and finally realized she was Christa Miller from The Drew Carey Show. She is multi-talented, only 59 years old, and it's heartbreaking what she has done to herself. This picture is huge, so please copy & paste the url to see it: https://www.closerweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Christa-Miller-Plastic-Surgery-0001.jpg

Desi Lydic wears the Yeti fur look better than Issa Rae. I love Jessica Williams's demure look, especially considering her out-there character in Shrinking. Brook Sansone brought snacks! Alex Borstein: satire or extreme lack of self-awareness? Liv Hewson showed despite having been dead for several days.

Wow -- what an experience! The Imax film, from what the video shows of it, seem the perfect way to start a visit to the museum. It brings home how the seas were there before us, will be there after, and are full of things we'll never know. I really love that painting of the sailors' mess hall. The color and symbol coded clothing for the flight deck of an aircraft carrier makes you wonder why that wasn't always the norm everywhere, perhaps even not only on boats. I did not notice the museum logo until you showed the sweaters. It's a perfect design! I have to ask: if you didn't get me a Fresnel lens, you did pick up one of the sweaters for me, right? Really, really enjoyed this report. Thank you! I do hope you go back on a really slow day and get a chance to use the simulators. They seem to be designed for explanation at the adult level, not toys for kids. Edited to say that this non-French speaker has decided to weigh in on the rade/roadstead question which has already distracted too much from this very rich report. I used to live near Hampton Roads, Virginia, so long ago knew that "roads" could refer not only to land, but to water. Hampton Roads is named after the Earl of Southampton, a leader in the London Company that financed English colonization in Virginia between 1607-1624. The "roads" refers to a roadstead, a sheltered place where a ship could ride at anchor relatively safe from displacement by strong currents or storms. sourceSince somewhere from 30 to 45% of English is derived from French, it's no surprise that both languages used a version of this word in the same way. Far from a poor translation, the museum made a good choice in re-introducing old terms to a modern public.

Depressing is the right word.
Every news article and political commentary leading up to the primary in Iowa was all about Trump & his perceived strength in the race. Every headline today is about this shocking, disgusting, insane, and yes, depressing desire of voters to enthrone the worst possible person in the highest office in the land.
"How could they?" we thought as Brazilians elected Bolosaro. We thought the same more recently, as Argentina made Milei its president. And every sane person in the US thought, "They wouldn't!", yet a known grifter, showman, and liar made it to the White House.
But the saddest, most depressing part is that Trump is supported, protected and buoyed by the powerful, the wealthy, and the educated.
We really are fucking doomed.

The Emmys red carpet ~ Sarah Snook Simona Tabasco That is the list of people who looked really, really good. Honorable mention: Ayo Edebiri Special mention for Issa Rae, who looked fantastic in that gold column she wore on Oscar night and somehow managed to carry off the feathery confection she wore tonight. Marin Hinkle looked good and I loved the color, cut, & texture of her dress -- a dress tragically ruined by that idiotic leg slit thing. www.vogue.com/slideshow/emmys-2024-red-carpet-live-see-every-look-dress-and-outfit-now
