Wonderful report with superb pictures! I love how much stuff you captured, too. Nothing is more frustrating that being told you're going to get to look at something, and then to get nothing but a tiny teaser, as often happens with newspaper articles. Lately I've been forced to don my marine raincoat quite a few times because of the weather. But now I want that sleek & stylish black and red number worn by the mannequin next to the green and white fishing trawler(?), research vessel(?). The cork(?) life vest looks singularly uncomfortable, but probably did its job. In another sartorial exhibit: This cloak is not from a Star Wars movie but was for protecting and warming shipwreck survivors. What a difference from the mylar sheets used for that purpose now! There was a special chamber for figurehead design. Some of them are made out of wax Were the wax ones actually put to use on the prow of a boat, or were they models from which to copy something more durable? That model of the shipwrecked galleon with the divers and sharks is something else! Every bit of carving in that museum -- the marble, the wood, the wax -- is so beautifully wrought. I'm sure this museum would love to get its hands on Géricault's Raft of the MedusaCoincidentally, I'm reading a book with a character whose masterwork is a critical book on that painting. The paintings in this museum are a treasure trove, even without the Medusa. This thread warrants multiple visits. There is so much to take in and the paintings certainly need studying. I want some Fresnel lenses to dress up my house and garden! It’s very reminiscent of the National Maritime Museum Greenwich. Mick, you may not have seen my coverage of that museum, since it's not in the museum board.

Can't wait to see more! I adore models of all sorts, but especially of complicated things like ships. What do the tags on the rowers (galley slaves?) mean: "thalamite" and "zugite"?
Good for you for resolving to get out to see more museums. The problem with being in a place with lots of culture, etc. is that it's too easy to think you'll just get around to it in some nebulous "later".

I would ask you why in the name of all sanity (or Sanibel) you went back to Montana when you might have stayed in a state that is not a deep freeze. Well, I would ask, but you'll probably answer something like "winter sports", a word duo that has the same appeal to me as "nipple piercing" or "tax filing".

Wonderful pictures and wow, the thrill of getting to go inside the cathedral. Even so, in one of the photos there appears to be a line of people waiting in the cold to get in.
When I was admiring Fumobici's reports on Florence, I blithely ignored the fact that he was there very early in the season in some of those reports and went out either early in the morning or in the rain for others. My trip was in May and it was the one place where I really wound up hating & being overwhelmed by the number of tourists.
Edited to add that we simul-posted & I'm only now seeing the most recent group of pictures. The one of the view over the olive trees is about as beautiful as anything I've ever seen!

Love it! Did you get to see the dog and if so, did you feel he was appropriately named?
When I was little (4 and 5 years old), my family lived in Alaska in Air Force base housing. You know this was long ago because we played outside mostly unsupervised.
My brother's nickname is Jig and it happened that a neighbor in the housing units had a pet boxer named Jiggs. The neighbor lady would call her dog and my brother would go home and become outraged when my mother insisted that she had not called him.

When people give a name to a dog, they try to find something that fits the dog's personality, right? This gives us kind of an edge over naming a human baby, because usually that name would be chosen before the baby is born. Well, Oaxacans were always shocked when they perceived a dog's name as being a human name. (maybe this is all over Mexico -- I don't know) They would say things like, "Ohhh, what are you going to do if you're with your dog and you meet someone named who has that name?!" I always answered that I couldn't imagine anyone caring one way or the other, but they remained semi-horrified and unconvinced. Anyway, this has not come up in quite a while, so I'd pretty much forgotten about it until seeing an article in the Washington Post titled The Most Popular People Names for Dogs. It contains a place to write your dog's name and you'll be told whether it is more dog or more human as a name, based on a presumably hypothetical "stadium of 100,000 people and 100,000 dogs". I checked all three of my dogs' names and the name of the dog who preceded them. All of them came out solidly as dog names except for Oliver, which was deemed "mostly dog". I'm surprised by these very scientific findings. The link above is probably firewalled, for which I apologize in advance.

There aren't extremes here in the sense that Cheery is talking about, but there are severe mood swings.
Yesterday was gorgeous -- clear, sunny, & a high way up in the 70s. The day before had been cold and wet.
And now, it's cold and wet again, with chipi-chipi (hard mist, not quite real rain) all day. The dogs & I just went out for a walk and are now home in our 64.4 degree house. It's 59 degrees outside.

Amen! For years it was thought that heart attacks were something that only men needed to worry about. It turned out that was because no studies had been done with women. Knowledge about the natural history of coronary heart disease in women was limited until recent years. Few studies included women, despite the fact that heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in women older than 50 years ... Women's health issues that did not concern reproduction received little attention and little research funding prior to 1986. sourceAlso: www.goredforwomen.org/en/about-heart-disease-in-women/latest-research/women-not-represented-in-research-equally

😠 need help from mossie here : what is the best RAF museum to visit ? Whatagain, when you want to get the attention of another anyporter, you can write his or her name preceded by le signe arobase -- the @ sign. This works for everyone except people such as you and onlyMark, whose "official" names on the forum are different from their usernames. For instance, if I write @whatagain, that won't produce a notification for you to come look at what I wrote. But if I write @pariswat, it will be "live" and show up as whatagain . The way to get the official name of anyone is to either look the person up in Members or just mouse over his/her name in the mini profile. It will show as @whoitis. The other way to get another anyporter's attention is to quote or quick quote from one of that person's posts.

If it’s the HP movie set tour you will be attending, it IS expensive. However, my daughter and I went there several years ago and she really liked it very much. I may have a report somewhere here on APIAS. Can’t remember. Strangely, I immediately remembered that you had made a report on the Harry Potter movie set tour, so looked it up. It appears I never commented on it, though! Well, now it's resurfaced, so I can go enjoy it for the first (or second?) time ~ anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/7436/harry-potter-studios

Wow -- that looks really compelling and beautifully acted besides!
What is the name of the documentary on which some elements are based, please?
I recently re-read Riding the Iron Rooster and that's all I know about modern day Mongolia and its people. Even so, that book was written in the mid to late 1980s and does not cover those subjects in great depth. This movie would be more of an eye-opener.
